How much does the 2018 GMC Terrain cost?

Prices have softened 9.60% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,774 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Terrain options to compare.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good car?

Yes — the 2018 GMC Terrain earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The owner feedback points to comfort, spaciousness, and a wide range of available features, especially in higher trim levels, while also noting that it can be smooth and enjoyable to drive. In practical terms, that makes it most appealing if you want a compact crossover with a roomy cabin and a feature-rich feel rather than a standout personality. With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many people find comfortable and enjoyable to live with over time, with praise centered on spaciousness and the range of features available. The expert drive notes that the Terrain can feel smooth and satisfying to drive, and it also highlights a more powerful 2.0L turbo setup as the better choice for stronger everyday performance. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and doesn’t have the brake, power, or pricing-related compromises some shoppers have reported.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Terrain?

At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a less complete service record. Focus on condition, prior damage, and how the vehicle drives in real-world use, since the Terrain’s appeal depends heavily on whether the individual example feels well kept and properly equipped. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest history and best-maintained example should get the most attention.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The trim ladder runs from SL to SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SL is the most stripped-down version, with only FWD, the 1.5-liter engine, and limited paint choices, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and upscale touches. The Denali is the most premium-feeling version, but the best value is usually the trim that gives you the features you want without pushing the price too far beyond the vehicle’s strengths.
• Powertrain: You can choose among a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. The 1.5-liter is the standard engine, but the 2.0-liter is the stronger and more satisfying choice if you want better acceleration and a more confident drive.
• Safety package: Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are standard. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are available, but adaptive cruise control and a higher-speed automatic emergency braking system are missing.
• Infotainment: The Terrain uses an 8-inch touchscreen with IntelliLink, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar subscription services, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, an SD card reader, and four USB data ports. Wireless device charging is included on Denali.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter test vehicle averaged 22.6 mpg, and the 1.5-liter was described as delivering disappointing fuel economy of 23.3 mpg.

Which 2018 GMC Terrain trim should I buy?

The 2018 GMC Terrain is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SL: This is the entry point, but it is very limited in scope. It comes only with FWD, the 1.5-liter engine, and a narrow set of paint choices, so it makes sense mainly if your priority is the lowest possible starting price.
• SLE: This is the trim most buyers should start with because it opens up the Terrain’s lineup without jumping straight to the highest prices. It is the practical step up if you want a more usable mix of equipment and value.
• SLT: This is the better choice if you want a more upscale feel and more available comfort and convenience features without going all the way to Denali.
• Denali: This is the most premium version, with the richest feature set and the upscale touches that make the Terrain feel closest to a luxury-leaning compact crossover.

The safety package includes Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder as standard, while other driver-assistance features are mostly optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Terrain?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,774 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.60% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,753, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 GMC Terrain's resale value?

The current average of $13,753 sits slightly below last year's $15,213.

That price movement suggests the Terrain has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A lower current average means future resale upside may be limited unless the vehicle is especially clean, well equipped, and well maintained. If you buy carefully, you may be able to minimize depreciation pain by choosing a desirable trim and a strong-condition example.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain safe?

The 2018 GMC Terrain earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 3-star rating for rear seat side-impact protection.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Teen Driver technology is standard, and Rear Seat Reminder is also standard. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are mostly optional, and adaptive cruise control plus a higher-speed automatic emergency braking system are missing. The rear-seat side-impact result is the main safety caveat you should keep in mind, especially if you plan to carry family passengers regularly.

Should I buy a 2018 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says the 2018 Terrain is conceptually appealing but falls apart under scrutiny, with weak value and safety concerns.

The bottom line: If you want the 2018 specifically, it makes the most sense as a selective used buy when you find a clean, well-priced example with the right equipment. If you’re price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and shop for the best-condition Terrain rather than focusing on this one alone.

How does the 2018 GMC Terrain compare to the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox?

Our experts score the 2018 GMC Terrain 6.2/10 and the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox 7.2/10. The two vehicles are closely related mechanically, but the Equinox comes out ahead overall. The Terrain has a slightly better good-and-great-deal share, while the Equinox offers a lower average used price and better highway fuel economy. If you want the stronger value play, the Equinox has the edge; if you prefer the GMC badge and are willing to pay a bit more for it, the Terrain still gives you a similar basic package.
