CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
overall

Summary
With 365 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $23,065, 18.6% of 2018 GMC Sierras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 4.44 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
63.6% of 2018 Sierra 1500 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out as a full-size pickup that leans harder into comfort and convenience than many buyers might expect from a truck. With a new truck just around the corner, GMC kept it relevant for 2018 by adding more standard content and safety features. It also made the reversing camera and the previously optional infotainment system standard equipment, which gives the truck a more modern feel and makes its cabin easier to live with.
That added equipment helps the Sierra 1500 appeal to shoppers who want a truck that can handle daily driving as well as work duties. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its smooth ride, luxurious feel, excellent features, power, fuel efficiency, and comfortable interior. At the same time, some owners pointed to missing features such as backseat vents and basic safety options, along with concerns about engine performance and transmission issues, so the truck’s strengths are balanced by a few notable drawbacks.

2018 GMC Sierra. Simply the best driving & riding truck I have ever owned. The magnetic ride sets it apart and was the reason I purchased a 2018 vs the newer body style without it. It’s also the reason I choose it over similar Ford and Dodge trucks.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Sierra 1500?
At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage truck or one with multiple owners. Focus on signs of prior body repair, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence of drivetrain or transmission issues. Because this truck was offered in many configurations, it also helps to confirm that the equipment on the listing matches the trim and options you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base truck comes standard with Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, a 6-speaker stereo, power locks, a power tailgate, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The SLE adds satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch IntelliLink screen, while the SLT adds leather seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the 5.3-liter V8. The Denali adds heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, wireless charging, and unique Denali headrest embroidery.
- Powertrain: Four engines are available, starting with a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, followed by a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. A mild hybrid eAssist version of the 5.3-liter V8 improves fuel economy, and the range-topping 6.2-liter V8 makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and available 4WD are offered, and the 6.2-liter pairs with an 8-speed automatic.
- Safety package: The Enhanced Driver Alert Package is available on the SLE and SLT and standard on the Denali. It includes forward-collision alert, automatic high-beam control, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors. The Safety Alert seat is also part of that package.
- Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trims but the Base get an 8-inch display. IntelliLink is standard across the lineup, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient setups return 18 mpg city, 24 highway, 20 combined. The conventional 5.3-liter V8 with rear-wheel drive returns 16 mpg city, 23 highway, 19 combined, while the test model with the 6.2-liter V8 and 4WD returns 15 mpg city, 20 highway, 17 combined.
Which 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 4 trim levels: Sierra 1500, SLE, SLT, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Sierra 1500: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you Bluetooth, a 6-speaker stereo, power locks, a power tailgate, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a 7-inch touchscreen with IntelliLink. If you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features, this is the trim to start with.
- SLE: This trim adds satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the larger 8-inch IntelliLink screen, while also opening up more option packages. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more modern cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- SLT: This is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale truck, since it adds leather seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the 5.3-liter V8 as standard. It also can be equipped with a locking rear differential and a Bose premium stereo.
- Denali: This is the luxury pick, with heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, wireless charging, and unique Denali headrest embroidery. It also standardizes the Enhanced Driver Alert Package, so it’s the trim to choose if you want the most comfort and the most safety content.
The Enhanced Driver Alert Package is available on the SLE and SLT and standard on the Denali.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Sierra 1500?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,834 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.87% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,100, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $26,193 sits slightly below last year's $28,430.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the truck for a while. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone.
Trucks with stronger feature content and cleaner histories should hold buyer interest better than rougher examples. Well-kept trims with desirable equipment are likely to be easier to move when it’s your turn to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes standard with a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines, six airbags, StabiliTrak stability control, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, and Easy Fill Alert for the tire pressure monitoring system. The Enhanced Driver Alert Package adds forward-collision alert, automatic high-beam control, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and the Safety Alert seat.
That package is available on the SLE and SLT and standard on the Denali, so safety equipment improves as you move up the lineup. The main caveat is that some owners still wanted more basic safety content on lower trims, so shoppers should pay close attention to which truck they’re evaluating.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.87% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard reversing camera and infotainment equipment, making the cabin feel more modern.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,220, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $26,193 average.
- It brings a completely redesigned, bigger, more capable truck.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2018 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and useful standard equipment. If you’d rather pay more for a full redesign, the 2019 is the better path for buyers who prioritize the newest body and a more thoroughly updated truck.
