Is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Generally — the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.4/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, luxurious feel, and comfortable interior, and they also call out its strong feature content and power. Is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?

Owner feedback points to a truck that many people find dependable, with praise for its smooth ride, comfortable cabin, and overall satisfaction over time. The expert drive notes also emphasize that it is fine for daily driving if you are used to trucks, and that it feels commanding and comfortable in more open settings. If you are buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid examples with the engine or transmission concerns some owners have mentioned.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Sierra 1500?

At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the trim you want, since some versions add meaningful comfort and safety upgrades. It is also worth checking for signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, or any drivability issues during the test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base truck comes with Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, a 6-speaker stereo, power locks, a power tailgate, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SLE adds satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch screen. The SLT adds leather seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the 5.3-liter V8, while the Denali adds heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, wireless charging, and a 7-speaker Bose stereo.
• Powertrain: The Sierra 1500 offers a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet, and a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet. The 5.3-liter V8 also has an eAssist version that improves fuel economy, and the 6.2-liter V8 is paired with an 8-speed automatic.
• Safety package: The Enhanced Driver Alert Package is available on the SLE and SLT and standard on the Denali. It includes forward-collision alert, automatic high-beam control, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and the Safety Alert seat.
• Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch IntelliLink touchscreen, while all other trims but the Base get an 8-inch display. IntelliLink includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system is standard across the lineup.
• Fuel efficiency: The most efficient setups return 18 mpg city and 24 highway, while the conventional 5.3-liter V8 with rear-wheel drive returns 16 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined. The test model with the 6.2-liter V8 and 4WD returns 15 mpg city, 20 highway, and 17 combined.

Which 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 4 trim levels: Sierra 1500, SLE, SLT, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Sierra 1500: This is the value starting point if you want the standard 7-inch IntelliLink screen, Bluetooth, a 6-speaker stereo, power locks, and the core safety and convenience equipment without paying for extras.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch screen, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, while also opening the door to more option packages.
• SLT: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily driver, since it adds leather seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the standard 5.3-liter V8.
• Denali: This is the luxury pick, with heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, wireless charging, and the standard Enhanced Driver Alert Package.

The Enhanced Driver Alert Package is available on the SLE and SLT and standard on the Denali.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Sierra 1500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,941 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,720, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $25,720 sits slightly below last year's $27,702.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-kept example with desirable equipment and a clean history, you may have a better chance of holding value than if you buy a higher-mileage truck with visible wear. Strong demand for comfortable, well-equipped pickups can also help support resale when the truck is presented well.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines, six airbags, StabiliTrak stability control, and the LATCH child-seat anchoring system. It also adds Easy Fill Alert to the tire pressure monitoring system for 2018, which makes tire inflation easier to manage. The Enhanced Driver Alert Package adds forward-collision alert, automatic high-beam control, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and the Safety Alert seat, and it is standard on the Denali.

Should I buy a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard reversing camera and infotainment equipment, making it easier to live with every day.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $30,654, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $25,720 average.
• It was fully redesigned for more capability and usefulness.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2018 is the smarter buy because it combines softer pricing with strong owner satisfaction and useful standard equipment. If you are willing to spend more for a redesigned truck, the 2019 is the better path.
