CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Sequoia

Summary
With 25 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $21,027, 16.0% of 2017 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Sequoia 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia stands out as a large, truck-based SUV built for buyers who want three rows of seating and the durability that comes with a body-on-frame design. It shares its platform with the Tundra, and Toyota’s buying guide emphasizes the Sequoia’s North American focus, its family-hauling mission, and its reputation for dependable powertrains. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is a full-size SUV that prioritizes toughness, towing ability, and long-term durability over carlike refinement.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the Sequoia’s established formula. The guide describes the second-generation Sequoia as a reliable family hauler with tried-and-true components, and it notes that all Sequoias from 2013 onward got the 5.7-liter V8. It also highlights the sliding rear window as a standout feature, while warning that the rear window mechanism can be a problem area and that frame rust is something shoppers should inspect carefully. The same section also points out that brakes are a common wear item because of the Sequoia’s size and 6,000-pound curb weight.
For buyers considering a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia, the appeal is straightforward: it offers the space, strength, and reputation for reliability that many large SUV shoppers want, while still carrying some of the compromises of a truck-based design. Fuel economy is a known weak point, and the ride can be truck-like, but those drawbacks are part of the Sequoia’s character.

Nice driving vehicle. Good features on the limited model. The only thing this one did not have was a remote starter option, which we will get installed. This the reason for the 4 star and not 5 star rating.

Good ride and lots of room. Like most of the controls except some could be more user friendly, IE: have to push button every time to fold in mirrors. Should be setting to do it automatically. Our last sequoia lasted forever and we NEVER had to do a thing to it. If this ones is as good, Ill be over the top happy!

Is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the overview frames this Sequoia as a full-size SUV for you if you want three rows, towing strength, and long-term durability over carlike refinement. It’s described as a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV with a clear family-hauling mission and a reputation for dependable powertrains, so it fits best if you value toughness and utility more than efficiency or a soft ride. 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview emphasizes tried-and-true components, a dependable powertrain reputation, and the durability that comes with a body-on-frame design. It also notes that the Sequoia’s formula is established and that this model year continues the long-running 5.7-liter V8 setup, which supports its reputation for staying power. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core drivetrain and more about age-related wear items and condition-specific issues that can show up on a large, heavy SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on the frame, the rear window mechanism, and the brakes, since the overview flags those as areas worth attention on this model. Because this is a large, truck-based SUV, you should also focus on overall condition and maintenance records rather than assuming every example has aged the same way.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 251 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.87% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,699, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $27,760 sits slightly below last year's $29,180.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are less likely to come from appreciation alone. If you plan to sell later, condition and documented maintenance will matter a lot, especially because buyers in this segment tend to compare examples closely. A clean history and strong upkeep can help your Sequoia stand out when it’s time to trade or list it privately.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.87% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the Sequoia’s established formula, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that currently gives you some negotiating room. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 remains a sensible choice when you want a proven full-size SUV with a clear durability-first identity.
