Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander a good car?

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?

Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for comfort and the kind of everyday usability that helps a family SUV earn trust over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that Toyota kept the Highlander fresh with an updated V6, a new transmission, and standard safety equipment, which supports confidence in long-term use. Toyota’s standard safety bundle also adds meaningful peace of mind for daily driving.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up hidden wear from family use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because this is a family-oriented crossover, it also makes sense to focus on interior condition, seat wear, and how well the electronics and convenience features work. If you’re comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to the cleanest example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with the basics, but the LE Plus is where you begin to get the features many shoppers expect, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. The XLE is the point where keyless entry and ignition arrive, while the Limited and Limited Platinum add more luxury and convenience equipment. The SE stands out with a retuned suspension and sporty styling, and it is the best-value choice if you want the most distinctive driving feel without jumping to the top of the range.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 is the engine to focus on, and the updated 8-speed automatic helps it deliver stronger performance without giving up efficiency. The base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined, so it is the version you should avoid if you want the Highlander to feel properly matched to its size.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise with forward collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard bundle is a major advantage, especially on lower trims where it helps offset feature gaps elsewhere.
• Infotainment: The available 8-inch touchscreen is a key upgrade on the LE Plus, and the lineup also offers an optional rear-seat BluRay entertainment system with a 9-inch display. Four USB charge ports are a useful addition for families, and the Limited trim brings an upgraded 12-speaker JBL sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. Real-world driving in testing returned an average of 19 mpg.

Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but the base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined, so you should only consider it if price matters more than refinement. If you go this route, the V6 is the better choice.
• LE Plus: This is the trim that starts to make the Highlander feel properly equipped, thanks to tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. It is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the features you’re most likely to use every day.
• XLE: Choose this trim if you want the convenience features that many shoppers now expect, especially keyless entry and ignition. It is the logical step up if you want a more complete family SUV without going all the way to luxury territory.
• SE: This is the trim to buy if you want the sportier personality Toyota added for 2017. It brings a retuned suspension, 19-inch alloys, LED running lights, and sporty styling inside and out, making it the most distinctive choice in the lineup.
• Limited: This is the upscale pick, with rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats with driver memory, an upgraded 12-speaker JBL sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs. It suits you best if comfort and premium features matter more than value.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, so even lower trims get the core safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,119 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.54% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,625, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $20,153 sits slightly below last year's $20,892.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations if they plan to trade in soon. The current range still shows healthy demand, which helps support value, especially for cleaner examples with strong equipment and good maintenance history. If you buy well now, you should have a better chance of preserving value later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander enjoys top overall marks from both the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as well as the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. The main caveat is that the IIHS gave the Highlander an Acceptable rating for headlights, and the NHTSA gave it four-star ratings in the frontal crash and rollover tests, along with five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.54% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its refreshed styling, updated V6, standard Toyota Safety Sense, and the new SE trim.

The bottom line: If you want a Highlander that feels more current than the earlier version and comes with a strong mix of comfort, safety, and family usefulness, the 2017 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2017’s refresh and standard safety equipment give it a strong case as the better-balanced buy.
