Summary
With 794 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,014.00, 29.6% of 2017 Subaru Imprezas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Impreza 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
With standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech, the 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a sensible choice in a segment where all-wheel drive sedans and hatchbacks are relatively uncommon. It is also described as affordable, safe, and practical, which gives it broad appeal for buyers who want everyday usefulness without moving to a crossover.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is presented as one of the few options for shoppers who want a sedan or hatchback with all-wheel drive. It is also noted as not being as refined as it could be, so its strengths are more about value, practicality, and confidence than luxury or polish.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 from owners, and 8/10 from our experts. The 2017 Subaru Impreza is framed as a sensible choice if you want a sedan or hatchback with standard all-wheel drive, and its appeal centers on everyday usefulness rather than luxury polish. It is described as affordable, safe, and practical, which makes it especially relevant if you want confidence and value in a compact car.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
The expert review also points to a car that gives you useful tech for the money, including standard smartphone integration and an available active safety system. That combination fits shoppers who want a practical daily driver with all-weather traction and broad usability.
22.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Impreza is presented as a practical, confidence-focused car, and the expert review emphasizes its affordable active safety and everyday usefulness. It also notes that the updated CVT problem from earlier Subaru models appears to have been resolved for 2017, which is a helpful sign for used buyers watching for drivability concerns.
The engine is described as compact and low-vibration in design, but also underpowered under harder acceleration, so long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability than about whether the car’s performance matches your expectations.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a car with a lower price or a higher-mileage profile. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance equipment still functions as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: In 2.0i trim, the car starts with a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control, while Premium adds an automatic transmission and more options. Sport adds a few minor performance-oriented touches, and Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
- Powertrain: The only engine choice is Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission. It is tuned for commuting, not quick acceleration, and the review notes that it can feel strained on highway on-ramps and uphill.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named active safety system. It uses two color cameras and can alert you if you stray from your lane, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow traffic. On Premium, it adds $1,395 and is bundled with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The touchscreen gives you access to music, podcasts, and navigation, and the top trim can be ordered with upgraded infotainment.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT helps the Impreza achieve 38 mpg highway and 28 city.
Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into standard all-wheel drive and standard smartphone integration. It is the most stripped-down version, so it makes sense if you care most about value and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the automatic transmission and opens the door to more options. It also gets EyeSight for $1,395, along with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights, which makes it the trim to focus on if safety tech matters to you.
- Sport: Choose this if you want the small performance-oriented upgrades mentioned in the review, including torque vectoring and the option for a stick shift. It is the trim to consider if you want a little more driving character without moving to the top of the range.
- Limited: This is the trim for you if you want the most comfort and convenience equipment, including leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. It makes the most sense if you want the most finished version of the Impreza rather than the cheapest practical one.
EyeSight is available on Premium, and that trim-level safety note is worth keeping in mind if you want the strongest mix of value and driver assistance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 22.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 812 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,019.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $12,059 sits slightly below last year's $12,888.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the chance of taking a steep depreciation hit in the near term. The model’s practical reputation and broad usefulness should still help support demand among shoppers who want standard all-wheel drive in a compact car.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?
It’s a Top Safety Pick Plus from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a top five-star safety rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Impreza’s EyeSight system is the key safety suite here. It uses two windshield-mounted cameras and can warn you about lane departure, apply the brakes in an emergency, and manage cruise control to follow the vehicle ahead. On Premium, EyeSight is bundled with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
One caveat is that the cruise-control behavior described in the review is unusual: if the car stays stopped for more than 3 seconds, the system turns off and the car can begin to roll forward, so you need to stay attentive in traffic.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 22.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as one of the few sedan or hatchback choices with standard all-wheel drive, plus standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The bottom line: If you want a compact car with standard all-wheel drive, useful tech, and a value-oriented ownership proposition, the 2017 Impreza is the primary path to consider. If you are especially price-sensitive, the softened market and decent deal availability make it worth shopping carefully for a well-kept example rather than jumping to a different year.
