CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Sentra

Summary
With 969 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,289, 26.8% of 2017 Nissan Sentras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Sentra 5 / 5 stars.
49.9% of 2017 Sentra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Sentra stands out as a practical compact sedan with a reputation for efficiency and everyday usability. Owners generally describe it as reliable and fuel-efficient, and many also appreciate its smooth driving experience and attractive styling. Those qualities make it appealing to buyers who want a straightforward commuter car that is easy to live with and economical to run.
At the same time, the 2017 Nissan Sentra is not positioned as a performance leader. The broader Sentra lineup’s weak point is its pedestrian performance, and the CVT transmission has been a recurring concern for some owners. Even so, the car’s value-oriented character, comfortable nature, and strong gas mileage help explain why it remains a sensible choice for shoppers focused on low-cost transportation rather than excitement.

Was my first car purchase. Everything I could want in a compact sedan for myself. Only got rid out if because the transmission blew out. Wouldnt get another due to Nissan specifically CVT Transmissions.

This car is very nice and amazing for a single person needing it for personal use. The gas mileage is great, if youre not planning to drive to many places other than work or the store. Highly recommend this car if you find one in good condition.

How much does the 2017 Nissan Sentra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,306 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,934 |
| Year-Round High | $9,641 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,613 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.20% |
Prices have softened 3.20% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 950 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Nissan Sentra earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners commonly praise its reliability, fuel efficiency, smooth driving experience, and attractive styling. That lines up well if you want a practical compact sedan for commuting and everyday use rather than a car built around performance.
With 26.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback repeatedly describes it as reliable, efficient, and trouble-free for everyday driving, with many drivers saying they appreciate its dependable nature and strong gas mileage. That said, some owners mention concerns tied to the CVT transmission, so reliability-minded shoppers should pay close attention to service history and how the car has been maintained.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the drivetrain has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
At 50.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on overall condition, especially signs of past bodywork, uneven wear, or anything that suggests the car has been used harder than expected.
Because this model is often chosen for value and commuting, prioritize maintenance records and condition over cosmetic appeal alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 950 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.20% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 50.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,934, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $9,306 sits slightly below last year's $9,613.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you plan to own it for a while, the current pricing gives you a more favorable entry point than a year ago. If you plan to resell sooner, you should expect value retention to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.20% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $7,932, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,306 average.
- It brings a refreshed look and updated cabin features.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall market snapshot, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines solid owner satisfaction with a softer price trend and decent deal availability. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in clean condition with good maintenance records.
