CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Summary
With 1,238 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,602, 33.0% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4.78 / 5 stars.
56.3% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands out as a luxury mid-size car that blends comfort, technology, and prestige in a way that has long defined the nameplate. For this generation, Mercedes gave the sedan a look that is even closer to a scaled-down S-Class, while the cabin leans into a high-tech, upscale feel with a swoopy dashboard and, in most versions, two side-by-side 12.3-inch display screens. It also comes with a lavish standard equipment list that includes electric adjustment for the steering wheel and front seats, a rear-view camera, satellite navigation, LED headlamps, and a wide range of driver-assistance safety features.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the breadth of its lineup. Buyers could choose from four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive on some versions, and a nine-speed automatic transmission across the range. The car also offered a strong spread of body styles, including sedan, wagon, coupe, and Cabriolet, which helped it suit different kinds of buyers. For those who wanted more performance, Mercedes-AMG versions added serious pace, while the standard models still delivered the refined, luxurious character that makes the E-Class such a benchmark.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The range can be confusing because there are many engine and drivetrain combinations, and some versions are far more expensive than others. Used prices also remain high for a car of this type, and owners have noted that maintenance costs can be significant. Even so, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains attractive because it feels genuinely premium, offers a lot of equipment, and combines comfort with the kind of advanced features that helped make the E-Class a leader in its class.

How much does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,664 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,664 |
| Year-Round High | $18,992 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,996 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.01% |
Prices have softened 7.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,220 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its luxurious feel, strong performance, and excellent handling, and many also like the comfortable ride and stylish design. That lines up well with the model’s upscale, comfort-focused mission and its appeal if you want a premium midsize car with plenty of features. With 37.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful number of opportunities to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback highlights a car that feels dependable in daily use, with owners repeatedly calling out its luxurious feel, comfortable ride, and strong performance. That said, some owners mention maintenance costs, so long-term ownership risk for used buyers is less about basic satisfaction and more about budgeting carefully for upkeep.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
At 56.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or lower-priced listings, because condition can vary widely across this model’s many configurations. Focus on signs of deferred maintenance, repair quality, and whether the car’s premium features are working as they should.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,220 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,664, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
The current average of $17,664 sits slightly below last year's $18,996.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For future resale, the softer current pricing may limit near-term appreciation, but it can also make the car easier to move if you buy well and keep it in strong condition. Premium models with broad appeal tend to hold attention better when they combine desirable features with a clean history and solid upkeep.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $22,993, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $17,664 average.
- It delivers a more polished luxury experience with stronger refinement and premium appeal.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2017 if you want the better value and are willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you want a newer-feeling luxury experience and can stretch your budget, the 2018 is the better premium pick. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2017 makes more sense; for shoppers prioritizing refinement over savings, the 2018 is worth the extra spend.
