CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
overall

Summary
With 84 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $12,008, 17.9% of 2017 Kia Sorentos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9.33 / 10.
84.5% of 2017 Sorento models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a midsize crossover SUV that makes a strong case for itself across styling and design, comfort and controls, safety and technology, value and practicality, and driving dynamics. It is presented as one of the best vehicles in its segment, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want an all-around capable family crossover rather than a one-note specialist.
It also carries an emphasis on durability and ownership confidence, since it is engineered to exceed the requirements of the most demanding warranty coverage in the business. Owner feedback generally reinforces its strengths, with praise for the smooth ride and stylish interior, along with comfort and power. At the same time, some owners point to a cramped third row that is not very accessible, and a few wished for a bigger screen or reported occasional engine issues, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort and overall balance more than maximum rear-seat space.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,325 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,325 |
| Year-Round High | $12,254 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,257 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.60% |
Prices have softened 7.60% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,233 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sorento earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 9.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, comfort, and power. The Sorento also stands out as a broad-appeal family crossover that balances style, practicality, and driving dynamics rather than focusing on just one strength.
With 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many shoppers feel good about keeping over time, with repeated praise for comfort, power, and overall satisfaction. The review summary also reflects confidence in the Sorento’s long-term ownership experience, even as some owners mention occasional engine issues.
The expert review reinforces that impression by emphasizing durability and ownership confidence, and it notes that Kia engineered the Sorento to exceed demanding warranty coverage requirements. That said, used buyers should still watch for signs of prior neglect or mechanical wear, especially on higher-mileage examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently, since those factors matter more when accident history is common.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes L, LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited. The base L misses some of the available driver-assistance features, while the SX Limited adds the most upscale presentation and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
- Powertrain: You can get a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, or a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6. The V6 is the strongest choice, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. These are available on all trim levels except the basic L, while the LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: Kia’s UVO system is available for most versions and supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri, Pandora, Yelp, and connected services. The review also notes that the screen could be larger and more modern.
- Fuel efficiency: With AWD and the V6, the Sorento is expected to get 19 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 19.4 mpg on the review loop.
Which 2017 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sorento is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, but it is the least appealing if you want the Sorento’s broader safety and convenience story, since some available driver-assistance features are not offered here.
- LX: This is the trim to consider if you want a more flexible starting point, since it can be paired with the stronger V6 and still keeps the Sorento’s value proposition intact.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it brings the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and sits in the sweet spot between equipment and price.
- SX: This trim adds the V6 as standard and moves the Sorento closer to a more premium driving and ownership experience.
- SX Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest feature set and the 360-degree surround-view camera system, but it makes the most sense if you want the top-end experience rather than the best bargain.
The safety package is strongest on trims above the basic L, so if advanced driver assistance matters to you, shop accordingly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,233 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.60% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,325, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $11,325 sits slightly below last year's $12,257.
That decline suggests the Sorento has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you price it competitively. For a future seller, the current trend points to a market that still values the model, but not at the same level it did a year ago.
Strong equipment, broad appeal, and a good reputation for comfort can help support demand when you eventually sell. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento safe?
The 2017 Kia Sorento earns Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS and a five-star crash test rating from the federal government.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sorento is available with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Those systems are available on all trim levels except the basic L, and the LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Only the SX Limited provides a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its broad appeal, strong value, and top-tier expert scores across cost effectiveness, technology, and safety.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,941, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,325 average.
- It feels more upscale and refined than before, with a new turbocharged engine option.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better pick because it combines value, safety, and broad capability. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better budget alternative, especially if its lower price matters more than the newer model year.
