Is the 2016 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Sorento earns a 4.64/5 user rating and an 8.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, performance, smooth ride, handling, and good fuel efficiency. The overview also points to a more upscale appearance and a refined interior, which fits well if you want a practical crossover that feels more polished than basic.
The tradeoff is that some shoppers found it less exciting and noted limited cargo space, so it makes the most sense if you value comfort, features, and everyday versatility over a sporty personality. With 27.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also meaningful market value to be found.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as reliable and praise its trouble-free feel, while also highlighting performance that holds up well in daily use. The expert drive notes reinforce that impression with a quiet cabin, confident braking, and steering that feels better controlled than you might expect in a large crossover.
The ownership picture is helped by Kia’s long warranty coverage, which adds peace of mind for used buyers. Even so, you should still check service records and overall condition carefully, since long-term wear matters more once factory coverage is no longer your safety net.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sorento?
At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or listings with incomplete records. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L is well equipped, but higher trims add meaningful upgrades such as UVO eServices, a rear camera, heated front seats, leather trim, navigation, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and more upscale lighting and convenience features.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 185 hp and a 6-speed automatic on the L, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft on select trims, and a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft on V6 trims.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual front advanced airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, a rollover sensor, ABS, stability control, traction control, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Higher trims add or offer a rear camera, backup warning, surround-view monitor, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and advanced smart cruise control.
- Infotainment: The Sorento offers UVO eServices, an 8-inch color display, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, voice-command navigation, Sirius traffic, and no additional subscription fees for UVO eServices. Top trims also add premium audio and connected features.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged all-wheel-drive setup is rated at 19 mpg city/25 highway/22 combined, and it takes regular unleaded gas.
Which 2016 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2016 Kia Sorento is offered in 8 trim levels: L, LX, LX V6, EX, EX V6, SX V6, Limited, Limited V6.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the value play if you want the Sorento’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It already brings a long list of standard equipment, including Bluetooth, steering-wheel controls, and key convenience features, so it works well if you want a practical family crossover without paying for extras you may not use.
- LX: This trim adds UVO eServices and more convenience-oriented options, making it a smart step up if you want better everyday usability. It’s the best-value choice for many shoppers because it opens the door to useful tech and comfort upgrades without jumping too far in price.
- LX V6: Choose this if you want more power and a standard third row. It suits you best if passenger capacity matters and you want the stronger V6 without moving all the way to the upper trims.
- EX: This is where the Sorento starts to feel more upscale, with standard dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leather trim, and more available tech and safety features. It’s a strong middle-ground choice if you want a richer cabin and more available equipment.
- EX V6: Pick this if you want the EX’s comfort and tech upgrades plus the V6 and the added utility of the third row and rear air conditioning. It’s the right fit if you want a more complete family setup without going to the top of the range.
- SX V6: This trim turns many EX V6 options into standard equipment and adds more premium styling touches. It makes sense if you want the most fully equipped V6 version without stepping into the Limited models.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich turbo model, with standard LED fog lights and access to advanced safety and convenience options. It’s the one to consider if you want the most technology and available driver assistance in the turbo lineup.
- Limited V6: This is the top choice if you want maximum equipment plus the V6, third row, and rear air conditioning. It’s the most complete version for shoppers who want the Sorento at its most upscale and versatile.
Safety features are broadly standard across the range, but some of the most advanced driver-assistance items are reserved for higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sorento?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,178 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,023.66, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $10,023 sits slightly below last year's $11,000.
That price movement suggests the Sorento has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A lower entry cost today can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a well-kept example with desirable equipment.
Demand should also stay supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a practical, well-equipped crossover. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento safe?
It received their top rating of Good in all tests and earned 2015 Top Safety Pick status for its performance in crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sorento comes with a broad standard safety package that includes dual front advanced airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags for the first and second rows, a rollover sensor, ABS, stability control, traction control, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Higher trims add or offer a rear camera, backup warning, surround-view monitor, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, advanced smart cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It’s an all-new redesign with a more upscale look, refined interior, and a new turbocharged engine option.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $8,651, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $10,023 average.
- It offers a stylish, well-equipped crossover with fair pricing.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,437, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $10,023 average.
- It broadens appeal with strong comfort, technology, and everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, features, and modern design, the 2016 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money, but the 2016’s redesign and stronger overall appeal make it the better buy for most shoppers.
