CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 573 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,337.00, 32.5% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
54.6% of 2017 Civic Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback stands out as a practical, fun-to-drive compact car with a sporty edge. Honda added it to the Civic lineup this year as the first Civic Hatchback sold in the U.S. since 2005, and it was aimed at buyers who want extra cargo space without giving up the Civic’s everyday usability. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is still a Civic, but one with a little more versatility and a more expressive personality.
It also benefits from the Civic’s major redesign for 2016, which brought a new look, new technology, and a new turbocharged engine option. In testing, the hatchback was described as enjoyable in a range of driving situations, from stop-and-go commuting to highway travel with a full cargo area. That makes it appealing to shoppers who want a compact car that can handle daily life well while still feeling engaging behind the wheel.
There are a few caveats, though. Owner feedback points to concerns about the air conditioning system and paint quality, including flaking paint, and some owners also noted the lack of certain features such as GPS. Even so, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback’s mix of cargo flexibility, sporty tweaks, and broad appeal makes it a strong choice for buyers who want a hatchback that feels both useful and enjoyable.

I am obsessed with this car. Best car I have ever had. I previously had the LX, but it got totalled, and I bought the same exact car but it is the EX. Heated seats, sunroof, push start. I really, really love it.

The features on this car is something else. The car has a blind spot camera on the right mirror. Hondas are a really reliable car. We’ve had a Honda until it had 300k+ miles on it and had no problems. Only thing I wish it had was a GPS but it’s not a huge negative. I was looking at either the Mazda3 hatchback or the civic hatchback and ultimately went with the civic just with the sleek design of the vehicle. Super smooth in its driving and would definitely recommend going Honda!

Owner feedback highlights reliability alongside performance and a spacious interior, and the cost-effectiveness discussion reinforces the Civic’s long history of reliability and high resale values. The expert evaluation also describes the Civic as a safe bet and notes that the hatchback adds practicality without losing the Civic’s core appeal.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that some owners have reported air conditioning and paint-quality concerns, so condition checks matter even on otherwise appealing examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint condition, and any signs of prior repair. Because owner feedback mentions air conditioning concerns and flaking paint, those areas deserve extra attention during a test drive and walkaround. If the car has the features you want, make sure they work as expected before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The hatchback’s design adds cargo space and unique exterior touches, while the cabin is smartly laid out with quality materials and effective soundproofing. The base setup also misses some of the richer tech and convenience features available on higher trims.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims make 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims make 180 hp.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on the Sport Touring and available for an additional $1,000 on the EX-L Navi. It includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic.
- Infotainment: Higher trims can get a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. Manual-transmission cars miss out on that full tech setup.
- Fuel efficiency: No mpg figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Sport, Sport Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the simplest way into the hatchback, and it makes the most sense if you want the Civic’s cargo flexibility and turbocharged power without paying for extras you may not use.
- EX: This trim is the better all-around pick if you want more convenience and tech while staying below the upper trims.
- EX-L Navi: Choose this if you want navigation and are willing to pay more for a richer feature set; the available Honda Sensing package is also tied to this trim.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for shoppers who want the more powerful 180-hp tune and a more expressive feel without jumping to the top of the range.
- Sport Touring: Pick this if you want the most complete version of the hatchback, including the standard Honda Sensing package and the fullest equipment list.
Honda Sensing is standard on the Sport Touring and available on the EX-L Navi for an additional $1,000.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 580 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,678.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $16,381 sits slightly below last year's $16,757.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, and the Civic sedan is rated a Top Safety Pick by IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance package, and it includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that can follow traffic even at low speeds. LaneWatch is another helpful available feature, using a camera to show what is in your blind spot on the dashboard touchscreen.
One caveat is that the hatchback itself was not specifically rated by IIHS, so you should pay close attention to the equipment on the exact car you are considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- This year stands out as the first Civic Hatchback Honda sold in the U.S. since 2005, giving it a clear identity within the Civic lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the hatchback’s mix of cargo flexibility, sporty character, and strong owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a smart target. If you are more price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples and use the softer pricing to your advantage.
