Is the 2017 Ford F-150 a good car?

Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.8/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10. Is the 2017 Ford F-150 reliable?

The owner feedback also points to a truck that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over time, especially when you factor in the praise for power and the spacious cabin. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the truck’s daily-driver usability alongside its off-road capability. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that minor quality issues and prior hard use can show up in individual trucks, so condition matters a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-150?

At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing or off-road driving. Focus on signs of wear that don’t always show up in photos, including suspension condition, body damage, and evidence of heavy use. If you’re comparing multiple trucks, put the cleanest example ahead of the one with the most equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Raptor’s unique body, suspension, tires, and off-road hardware make it much more specialized than a standard F-150, so you should make sure the equipment matches the price and your intended use.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 delivers 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, and the 10-speed transmission helps keep highway revs low while supporting strong performance.
• Safety package: Standard blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage is a major plus, and the Technology package adds lane-keep with warning and intervention, adaptive cruise with collision mitigation, auto high-beams, and auto wipers.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3 and Sync Connect, and it includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The truck is rated at 15 mpg city, 18 highway, and 16 combined.

Which 2017 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Ford F-150 is offered in 1 trim level: Raptor.

Here's the short version:

The Raptor is the clear choice if you want the most serious off-road hardware and the strongest performance character in the lineup. It also suits you best if you want a truck that can handle daily driving without giving up its desert-running personality.

The safety package is strong, with standard blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage, plus available driver-assistance upgrades through the Technology package.

If you find a listing below $21,312, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $21,312 sits slightly below last year's $22,435.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should be easier to move later than a rougher truck with visible wear or accident history. The Raptor’s strong enthusiast appeal can also help support demand, especially for cleaner, better-equipped trucks.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2017 Ford F-150 earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, with a four-star rollover rating, and the IIHS gives it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front, front-side, rear-side, rear-body, and front-head airbags, inflatable rear belts, traction and stability control, a rollover safety system, and brake assist. The standard blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage adds useful everyday protection, while the available Technology package brings lane-keep with warning and intervention, adaptive cruise with collision mitigation, auto high-beams, and auto wipers. The main caveat is the lower rollover result from NHTSA, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The Raptor returns with a new platform, stronger suspension, and serious off-road intent.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,738, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,312 average.
• It leans more toward luxury while still feeling like a capable pickup.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $23,655, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $21,312 average.
• It is a more well-rounded truck with standout towing and fuel economy.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of this truck, the 2017 is the one to target. If price matters more than the latest off-road hardware, the 2016 can save you money, while the 2018 is the better pick if you want a broader all-around truck and don’t mind paying more.
