CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 350 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,271, 35.7% of 2017 Ford Explorer listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Explorer 4.8 / 5 stars.
77.1% of 2017 Ford Explorer listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV that blends strong performance with a more car-like driving feel than older, truck-based Explorers. In this generation, Ford moved the Explorer to a rear-wheel-drive-biased platform, and the result is better handling than any previous Explorer without giving up smoothness or refinement. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a large SUV that feels more composed on the road than its predecessors.
Power is another major part of its appeal. The 2017 Ford Explorer could be had with a 300-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, and the available 3.0L EcoBoost V6 delivered 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The article also notes that this Explorer is genuinely fun to drive, and the 10-speed automatic helps keep the engine in the right rev range. For shoppers who want efficiency, the Explorer was available as a hybrid from 2020 to 2023, but that does not apply to the 2017 model year.
Inside, the 2017 Ford Explorer offers the kind of equipment many family buyers want, including seating for up to seven, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 13.2-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and two USB ports. Ford also equipped it with a broad list of driver-assistance features, though some owners still wish for more available lane and parking assist features. Overall, the 2017 Explorer is distinctive for combining space, strong available power, and a more polished driving experience than earlier generations, even if its interior does not feel as premium as its price suggests.

How much does the 2017 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,479 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,479 |
| Year-Round High | $14,484 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,488 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.96% |
Prices have softened 6.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,195 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Ford Explorer earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, spacious interior, and impressive features, and many also like its power and handling, especially with the EcoBoost engine. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV with a more composed driving feel and plenty of everyday utility. With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers repeatedly calling out the smooth ride and strong overall livability. That kind of satisfaction usually matters most when you plan to keep a used SUV for several years. For you, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been well maintained and not worn down by heavy family use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
At 65.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from ones with past damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of body repair, uneven wear, or neglected maintenance. Focus on overall condition first, because the best used Explorer for you is the one with the cleanest history and the most consistent upkeep.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,195 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,479, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $13,479 sits slightly below last year's $14,488.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term appreciation if you plan to resell soon. If you choose a well-kept example, you can still protect more of your value by avoiding high-mileage or accident-history vehicles. Strong condition and clean records matter more when the broader market is already trending down.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $11,868, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,479 average.
- Ford refreshed it with updated styling and more features.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value proposition, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines strong owner satisfaction with a softer market and plenty of listings. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better secondary path because it costs less and still brings meaningful updates.
