CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Chevrolet Malibu
overall

Summary
With 1,883 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,026, 26.0% of 2017 Chevrolet Malibus for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu 4.3 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
52.6% of 2017 Malibu models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that Chevrolet has refined into a strong all-around package. The available test-drive commentary says it “perfects its midsize sedan recipe,” and it also notes that the car’s most recent redesign for the 2016 model year is what makes it deserving of more respect. That gives the 2017 Malibu a clear identity: it is a mainstream family sedan that benefits from a recent redesign rather than trying to win attention with gimmicks.
What makes it appealing is the combination of comfort, features, and efficiency that owners repeatedly praise. Reviewers also point to its smooth driving experience and modern tech options like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which help it feel current and easy to live with. At the same time, there are some drawbacks to keep in mind: some owners describe it as noisy and slightly slow on initial acceleration, and a few feel the price could be lower. Even with those criticisms, the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu comes across as a well-rounded sedan that offers a lot of everyday value.

The car has all the features Im looking for, from great gas mileage to Apple CarPlay. Thee car is a great value for the money. The only feature this car is missing is an inverter, but those are only important on long road trips. I was also looking at the Hyundai Elantra, and this car is a close competition.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating, which points to a strong all-around showing. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, features, and good gas mileage, and they also highlight its smooth driving experience and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The overview frames it as a mainstream family sedan that benefits from a recent redesign, so you should expect a practical, easy-to-live-with car rather than something built around gimmicks.
With 27.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to find a competitive example.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many people find comfortable, efficient, and easy to live with over time. It also uses language that suggests it can be counted on for everyday use, with reviewers emphasizing its smooth driving experience and good gas mileage.
The expert commentary reinforces that dependable feel by describing the Malibu as refined, composed, and well sorted in daily driving. It also notes that the car’s mechanical hardware and tuning make it enjoyable to drive, which supports the impression of a sedan built for steady long-term use.
If you’re shopping used, the main ownership risk is less about the concept of the car and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition details that matter in a family sedan: bodywork quality, interior wear, and whether the car feels as clean and well-kept as the photos suggest.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Malibu L starts lower on the ladder, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add equipment and polish; the Premier stands out for its more upscale presentation and stronger feature content.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, plus a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder exclusive to Premier and a Malibu Hybrid rated at 46 mpg in combined driving.
- Safety package: Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist.
- Infotainment: MyLink gains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while also offering OnStar services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The Malibu Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier’s 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 26 mpg combined.
Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, Premier.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the fewest extras.
- LS: This is the first step up and should be the value-minded choice if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
- LT: This is the trim to focus on if you want the best balance of features and cost, since it sits in the middle of the lineup.
- Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the Malibu’s efficiency-focused setup.
- Premier: This is the most upscale choice, with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the richest feature content.
For safety-package shoppers, note that the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II systems are bundled on Premier rather than spread across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,864 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.17% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,802, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $10,982 sits slightly below last year's $11,705.
That softer pricing suggests the Malibu is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can work against you if you’re planning to sell soon. If you buy at today’s lower average and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned than a seller who bought when prices were higher.
The market also shows that shoppers still respond to well-equipped, well-reviewed examples, especially when the car has strong owner satisfaction and a good feature set. That helps support demand for cleaner, better-maintained listings over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS, and the federal government gives it five-star ratings across the board, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevrolet includes Rear Seat Reminder to help prevent you from leaving children or pets in the car, and the Malibu also offers a full suite of driver-assistance features. Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist.
One important caveat is that the IIHS notes the headlights are rated Poor, which is the main reason the car falls short of an even stronger safety result.
Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its strong redesign-era balance of comfort, tech, and efficiency.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,718, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,982 average.
- The 2016 is a freshly redesigned Malibu with updated engines, stronger styling, and a roomier interior.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded choice, the 2017 is the safer bet because it combines a lower current average price with strong owner satisfaction and a well-equipped, modern feel. If your main goal is to spend less up front, the 2016 is the value path to consider, especially if you find one in clean condition with the features you want.
