How much does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 5.45% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,785 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, features, and good gas mileage, and they also highlight its smooth driving experience and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In use-case terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a polished midsize sedan for commuting, family duty, and everyday driving. The market also shows 27.9% of listings as good or great deals, which supports its appeal if you’re shopping carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that owners find comfortable, feature-rich, and good on gas, with several comments reinforcing its smooth driving character and modern tech. The expert evaluation also describes it as comfortable, safe, fuel efficient, and technologically advanced, which supports the idea that it’s a car you can count on for regular use. Chevrolet’s maintenance-friendly ownership story is helped by the broader value proposition, and used buyers should still watch for condition issues and verify that any prior wear or repair history is acceptable for the price.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 48.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated repairs. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, paint consistency, interior condition, and how the car drives, since owner feedback mentions quality concerns on some examples. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on the best-maintained car rather than the cheapest one.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Malibu L starts with a lower entry price, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add equipment and polish; the Premier stands out for its upscale feel and stronger engine, while the base car is the most stripped-down choice.
• Powertrain: The Malibu offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, a Hybrid rated at 46 mpg combined, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder exclusive to Premier with 250 horsepower and a 9-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights; Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. These packages are bundled on Premier rather than standard across the lineup.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connection.
• Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg combined, and the Premier test car averaged 27.3 mpg on a test loop.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if your priority is getting into the Malibu at the lowest price, but it’s the least equipped version.
• LS: This is the first step up and a better starting point if you want a more balanced mix of value and everyday usability.
• LT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you a stronger equipment mix without jumping to the top-end price.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the efficiency-focused version of the Malibu.
• Premier: This is the most upscale and most powerful choice, with the exclusive turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the richest feature content.

For safety equipment, the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages are bundled on Premier, so you’ll want to look closely at those options if advanced driver assistance matters to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,785 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.45% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 48.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,618, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $10,665 sits slightly below last year's $11,279.

That decline suggests the Malibu has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer pricing environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect value, but the broader market trend still points to gradual depreciation. A clean history and strong maintenance record matter more when the segment is price-sensitive.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS and five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes Rear Seat Reminder to help prevent you from leaving a child or pet behind, and the Malibu also offers a full suite of driver-assistance features. Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. One caveat is that the IIHS notes poor headlights, which is the main reason the car falls short of an even stronger safety result.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 48.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.45% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its refined redesign, strong tech, and broad everyday appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,482, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,665 average.
• It was fully redesigned with fresh engines, a stronger design, and more tech and safety features.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the better pick if you want the more refined, well-rounded version of this generation and you’re willing to pay a bit more for it. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can still make sense because it delivers the redesigned Malibu formula at a lower entry price.

How does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu compare to the 2017 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu 8.3/10 and the 2017 Toyota Camry 7.5/10.

The Malibu looks like the better value here because it costs less on the used market while still offering strong tech and a more modern feel. The Camry has the edge in average used price and deal share, but the Malibu’s lower price, better expert score, and stronger technology story make it the more compelling choice if you want more features for the money.
