How much does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 6.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,842 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating, which points to a well-liked and well-regarded used midsize sedan.

The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, features, and good gas mileage, and they also highlight its smooth driving experience and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Malibu’s role as a mainstream family sedan that aims to be easy to live with rather than flashy.

With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with repeated praise for comfort, good gas mileage, and a smooth driving experience. The expert commentary also describes the Malibu as enjoyable to drive, comfortable, safe, fuel efficient, and technologically advanced, which supports the idea that it’s built to be a trouble-free daily driver.

Chevrolet also includes useful ownership-minded tech such as Teen Driver, which can help you monitor how the car is being used. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Malibu’s core formula and more about finding one that has been cared for consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and any signs that the car’s features or safety systems were repaired after damage. Because the Malibu’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, tech, and smooth daily use, you’ll want to make sure the specific car you’re considering still feels tight and well maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup runs from the base L through LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier, with the Premier adding the most upscale feel and the 2.0-liter turbo engine. The base car starts with a more basic setup, so you’ll want to compare equipment carefully if you care about comfort and convenience features.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, while the Premier gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a 9-speed automatic. The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink gains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connection. The system is described as simple to understand and simple to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier is rated at 26 mpg combined.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if your priority is getting into the Malibu at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you mainly want the Malibu’s core comfort and efficiency without paying for extras.
• LS: This is the first step up and a sensible middle ground if you want a little more equipment without jumping too far in price. It should be the trim to compare first if you want value without stretching to the top end.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the sweet spot between affordability and features. If you want a more satisfying everyday Malibu without paying Premier money, this is the one to focus on.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you’re willing to trade some trunk space for efficiency. It’s the trim for shoppers who care most about mileage.
• Premier: This is the one to buy if you want the strongest performance and the most upscale experience. It gets the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the richest feature set, making it the most complete Malibu in the lineup.

For safety-minded shoppers, the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages are important to look for, especially on higher trims where they were bundled as options.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,842 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.33% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,795, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $10,804 sits slightly below last year's $11,534.

That softer pricing suggests the Malibu is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can help you if you’re shopping but may limit upside if you’re planning to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect value against further market softness. The key is to avoid overpaying for a car with prior damage or missing equipment, because those factors can weigh on future demand.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS and five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes Rear Seat Reminder to help prevent you from leaving children or pets in the car, and the Malibu also offers a full slate of driver-assistance features through the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages. Those packages add forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist.

One caveat to keep in mind is that the headlights are rated Poor by IIHS, which is why the car falls short of an even stronger safety result.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 Malibu stands out for its refined midsize-sedan formula, strong tech, and well-rounded everyday usability.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,658, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,804 average.
• It was fully redesigned, bringing fresh engines, stronger styling, and a more spacious interior.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2017 is the stronger choice because it combines a softer market price with strong owner satisfaction and a polished feature set. If your main goal is saving money up front, the 2016 is the better value play, especially if you find one in clean condition with the right equipment.
