CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 4 Series

Summary
With 897 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,162.00, 31.7% of 2017 BMW 4 Series for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 4 Series 4.08 / 5 stars.
50.4% of 2017 BMW 4 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 4 Series stands out as a sleek, driver-focused coupe-and-convertible lineup that was designed to feel more distinctive than the 3 Series models it replaced. BMW positioned it as something more than a simple badge change, and the car backs that up with a lower, sleeker shape, a narrower model range, and body styles that include the coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe. It also keeps the premium feel buyers expect from the brand, with ample power and equipment across the range.
For 2017, the first-generation 4 Series received an update in early 2017 that brought cosmetic and tech upgrades, including LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive. Even base models were well equipped, with 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats, and BMW’s iDrive operating system. The lineup also offered trim levels such as Sport Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport, giving buyers a range of looks and personalities within the same basic package.
What makes the 2017 BMW 4 Series appealing is the combination of strong performance and everyday polish. The available turbocharged engines, rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, and automatic or manual transmission choices give it real enthusiast appeal, while the car’s high-quality interior and generous equipment list make it feel upscale. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong, and some owners have pointed to missing expected features and limited rear-seat comfort as drawbacks.

The car is in worse conditions than shown in these photos. The engine bay is dirty and the brakes of rust on them. The car was also driven twice the national average in one year (29k miles) and is $3,000 overpriced. The salesperson was super nice and helpful but the car was just in bad conditions.

The only blemish so far is it lacks remote start, other than that I love this car. I have the 440i and am impressed with the power, comfort and drivability, a solid 4.95. I’ve had it 3 days and am still in the can’t wait to drive it again stage. Great job BMW.

This BMW 4 series car is absolutely stunning. Beautiful colors both inside and out and very well equipped. And the price sure seems fair when considering modern day pricing structures. I really came close to buying this car but my BMW X3 just suits my needs better.

Prices have softened 4.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 912 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and condition across the market.
If you find a listing below $15,888.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Generally — the 4.08/5 user rating points to a car that many shoppers find rewarding to own. Drivers consistently praise its performance and handling, its power, and its stylish design. The same feedback also highlights its value for the money, which matters if you want a premium-feeling coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe without shopping brand-new.
That said, the overview makes clear that this model is aimed at you if you want a sleek, driver-focused luxury car with strong everyday polish rather than maximum practicality. If that matches your priorities, the 2017 BMW 4 Series fits well.
With 28.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.08/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a car that many owners find dependable in daily use, with praise centered on performance and quality rather than constant trouble. At the same time, some owners mention reliability concerns and minor issues, so you should expect a premium-car ownership experience where maintenance history matters.
For used buyers, the long-term risk is less about whether the car can be enjoyable and more about whether prior care has kept repair exposure in check.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?
At 51% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows BMWs. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and features work as expected, since owner feedback mentions missing expected features and minor issues.
If you are comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest history and best maintenance record ahead of cosmetic extras. That approach matters more here than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?

What is the 2017 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $16,200 sits slightly below last year's $17,036.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Because this model has a premium image and strong enthusiast appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to market than neglected ones. If you preserve service records and avoid accident history, you give yourself a better shot at holding value.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.08/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.08/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want the updated first-generation 4 Series with a good mix of style, performance, and market softness that can help you negotiate. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as the better-balanced pick when you want a premium coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe with broad appeal and a more favorable buying environment.
