CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
overall

Summary
With 1,883 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,628, 31.3% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
55.5% of 2017 C-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class stands out as a compact luxury sedan that delivers a near-perfect blend of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal. It is also notable for being the best-selling Mercedes-Benz in the U.S., with more than 70,000 Americans taking one home in 2016. That combination helps explain why it remains such a compelling choice for buyers who want a premium badge without giving up everyday livability.
For 2017, the formula is essentially more of the same, which is a strength here rather than a weakness. The car’s appeal comes from its balanced character: it is stylish, luxurious, and responsive, while still feeling comfortable to drive. The main tradeoffs are practical ones, since some owners report that maintenance costs can be high and taller passengers may find the cabin a bit cramped.

Reviewed a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S Coupe on Apr 11, 2023
The c63s is one of the best cars Ive ever driven. The steering, throttle response and brakes are all amazing. The suspension is extremely rough, even compared to cars like the F-type. However the driving experience makes the bumpy ride worth it. It has a great interior with a good sized trunk. The back seats are small, but much larger than a LC500. If youre in the market for a fast and fun car definitely pick one up. Its an amazing car with an amazing hand-built V8 that will last. Id definitely take a C63 coupe over a F-type, DB11, Hellcat, M4, M8, Gt350 and almost every car in the segment. (Below the Lc500 though) Overall a great car you should pick up if its in your budget.

The Mercedes Benz C Coupe sets itself aside from its sedan version. In fact, despite having the same nameplate, and badging, it is an entirely different car. Kudos to the sedan, no doubt, but the Coupe just epitomizes the right balance between pure luxury and pure sport. It is pleasant to find how well it does both in equal parts. Beautifully styled inside and out, it offers upgrades as standard that are options with the sedan. Drives enthusiastically, precisely, and comfortably. This model year is where the depreciation has its full effect and is quite affordable. It puts a smile on my face just by gazing at it, let alone what it does when I get behind the wheel.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating and 7.83/10 expert rating both point to a strong overall package. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
You get a car that drivers consistently praise for its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features. The overview also makes clear that this model year is aimed at you if you want a premium badge without giving up everyday livability, with comfort and responsiveness as core strengths.
The market also looks reasonably accessible, with 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers also describe it as powerful, comfortable, and luxurious, and the review summary points to a car that many owners enjoy living with over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that balanced character, noting that the C-Class does many things right and remains a compelling compact luxury sedan.
The ownership tradeoff is that maintenance costs can be high, so used buyers should pay close attention to service history and budget for upkeep before committing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and any signs of deferred upkeep, since this model can be expensive to maintain. It’s also smart to confirm that any reported fuel-line concerns have been addressed.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version includes Agility Control, while the Luxury version uses softer-tuned dampers and smaller 17-inch tires. The Sport package and Airmatic air suspension add a more tailored driving feel, so you should pay close attention to ride quality and wheel/tire setup if comfort matters to you.
- Powertrain: You’ll find a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque paired with a 7-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive available. The performance notes also point out that the turbo four is not as quick or satisfying as the previous V6, and fuel economy is not especially impressive.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, and an attention monitor. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch central screen is standard with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, map updates, and SiriusXM traffic and weather data, while voice recognition, an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, and COMAND features add convenience.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert notes a calculated 23 mpg over a long test, with EPA estimates of 24 mpg city and 31 highway for 4Matic models, and 34 highway for rear-wheel-drive versions.
Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.
Here's the short version:
The C300: is the trim to focus on, since it’s the core model and the one most dealers stock. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the 7-speed automatic, and the choice of rear-wheel drive or 4Matic, so it covers the broadest range of buyers. If you want the best balance of everyday livability and available equipment, this is the trim to start with.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, with standard forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and rear side thorax-level airbags.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting forever for a better deal.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,894 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.90% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,330, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?
The current average of $17,638 sits slightly below last year's $18,743.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned than a buyer who pays too close to the top of the range.
The market still shows meaningful demand, and that can help support future value if the car remains clean and well documented. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?
The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, an attention monitor, and stability control that can help compensate for crosswinds. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- More of the same is the point here: the expert summary says the 2017 C-Class keeps the formula of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal intact.
The bottom line: If you want a compact luxury sedan with strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a market that has softened enough to create opportunities, the 2017 is a sensible buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on clean, well-maintained examples near the low end of the range and be selective about history and upkeep.
