Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also like its responsiveness and comfort. The overview points to a compact luxury sedan that balances comfort, performance, price, and prestige, which makes it a strong fit if you want an upscale daily driver with a familiar luxury-sedan feel rather than a major reinvention. With 35.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is also a decent amount of market value to compare.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a car that many owners find enjoyable to live with over time, especially because of its comfort and strong driving character. The expert review also describes the C-Class as a car that does so many things right that it is hard to choose a better compact luxury sedan, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable long-term choice if you stay on top of maintenance. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest that a well-equipped example can be had without pushing into the highest price brackets.

That said, used buyers should still budget carefully for ownership costs and inspect for any signs of the fuel-line concern mentioned by owners.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long option list. Pay close attention to maintenance records, signs of prior bodywork, and any evidence of wear that could point to expensive ownership down the road. Because owners mention potentially high maintenance costs, condition and service history matter a lot here.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The C-Class is described as starting under $40,000, with a Luxury package that swaps in a thinner upright chrome grille and hood ornament, while the Sport package changes the look and feel with a more aggressive presentation. The base setup is still described as upscale, but the cheaper versions do not get every visual or comfort upgrade.
• Powertrain: You’ll find a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and available in rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The review notes that the turbo four is less satisfying than the previous V6, even though it remains strong for the class.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and an attention monitor. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch central screen is standard with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, three years of map updates, and five years of SiriusXM traffic and weather data, and the system also includes voice recognition and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive model is rated at 34 mpg highway, while the 4Matic version is rated at 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The review also notes a calculated 23 mpg over a long test.

Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.

Here's the short version:

The C300 is the trim to focus on because it is the core version described in the review and the one most dealers are likely to stock. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the standard 7-inch screen, and the C-Class’s main luxury and safety strengths without pushing you into the more expensive AMG territory. If you want the best value, this is the one to start with, then shop carefully for the options you actually want.

The safety package is strong even at the standard level, with forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and an attention monitor included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,881 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,142, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?

The current average of $17,142 sits slightly below last year's $18,668.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the car in excellent condition, you can reduce the impact of that softer market. Well-documented maintenance and clean history will matter more if you want to protect value later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?

The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help keep the car on course in crosswinds, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and an attention monitor. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. That means the standard car is already well equipped, but some of the most helpful driver-assistance features still depend on how the car was optioned.

Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• More of the same is the point for 2017, and the expert review says that consistency is a very good thing for buyers who want the familiar C-Class formula.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, inventory, and the classic C-Class experience, the 2017 is the right year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may still want to compare nearby years, but the 2017 already offers a compelling balance of value and satisfaction.
