There are 559 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2014 BMW 4 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2014 BMW 4 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its performance, sleek design, and high-quality interior, along with the driving experience, power, handling, and comfort. That lines up well with the overview’s focus on a sporty daily driver that still works as a practical premium coupe. If you want a car that blends enthusiast appeal with everyday usability, this model year fits that brief well.

33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2014 BMW 4 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in the ways that matter to shoppers who want a sporty coupe they can enjoy regularly. The review summary also emphasizes that many owners feel good about the car’s performance and overall driving experience over time. On the expert side, the car is described as a fun-to-drive coupe that can be worth the money for the right buyer, which supports the idea that it can be a satisfying long-term ownership choice if you value the driving experience.

The main ownership risk for used buyers is that higher maintenance costs can make the car more expensive to keep over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW 4 Series?

At 50.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing cars with similar prices but different condition histories. Focus on signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs, since this model can be rewarding to drive but not the cheapest coupe to maintain.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is modern and well fitted, and the bucket seats offer strong side bolstering for spirited driving, but the cushioning may be less comfortable on longer trips. The base setup also leaves some desirable equipment to higher-priced versions.
• Powertrain: The 428i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while the 435i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The 4-cylinder is the lighter, more playful choice, while the 6-cylinder brings more power but adds nose weight.
• Safety package: The car includes front and side impact airbags, and the test model had a backup camera. More active safety tech costs extra, so you should check whether a used example has the driver-assistance equipment you want.
• Infotainment: The system uses iDrive, which takes time to learn. The test model lacked navigation and streaming Bluetooth audio, so you should verify the exact tech content before you buy.
• Fuel efficiency: The 428i returns 23 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with the automatic transmission, while the xDrive version is rated at 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The 435i returns 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

Which 2014 BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?

The 2014 BMW 4 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 428i and 435i.

Here's the short version:

• 428i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 4 Series experience without paying for extra power. It delivers the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, strong fuel economy, and the lighter, more playful feel that suits the car’s sporty-daily-driver mission.
• 435i: Choose this if you want more straight-line performance and don’t mind the added cost or the heavier nose. It brings the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder and is the more powerful option in the lineup.

The safety content notes that the car comes with standard airbags, while more active safety tech requires paying more, so check equipment carefully on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW 4 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 559 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.66% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 50.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,091, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 BMW 4 Series's resale value?

The current average of $12,233 sits slightly below last year's $13,542.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the current pricing trend means there may be less room for appreciation unless the car is especially clean, well maintained, and well equipped. Cars with stronger condition histories and desirable equipment should be easier to move later than examples with accident records or missing features.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 BMW 4 Series safe?

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The 4 Series comes with front and side impact airbags, and the test model included a backup camera. More active safety tech requires paying more, so you should confirm which driver-assistance features are present on any used example you’re considering. The backup camera was called out as a weak point in the test model, so that’s worth checking closely during a test drive.

Should I buy a 2014 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 50.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It marks BMW’s shift to a distinct 4 Series identity, separating the coupe from the 3 Series and emphasizing sporty daily-driver appeal.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $13,576, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $12,233 average.
• It moves further toward a more distinctive coupe and convertible family with a longer, lower, wider shape.

The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and the core sporty-coupe experience, the 2014 is the better value. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer take on the same formula, the 2015 is the cleaner upgrade path.
