Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 7.83/10 expert rating point to a car that can reward you if you value substance over flash. The Passat is presented as a straightforward midsize family sedan with conservative styling, a roomy, family-friendly character, and an appeal that can be easy to overlook in the market.

The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Safety.

That combination makes sense if you want a comfortable, practical sedan rather than something flashy, and 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Passat’s reliability picture is mixed in the market, but the expert review notes that mechanically it has earned mostly high marks from owners since the 2012 redesign. It also points out that reported reliability concerns have been driven more by infotainment complaints than by broader mechanical issues, which helps separate everyday usability from headline reputation.

The review also says the car offers excellent value and strong fuel efficiency, which can make ownership feel easier to justify even if you’re cautious about the brand’s reputation. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that you should verify condition carefully and focus on how the car has been maintained rather than assuming every example will age the same way.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Passat?

At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim car with more equipment. Pay close attention to overall condition, because the Passat’s appeal depends heavily on whether the car has been kept clean, well maintained, and free of unresolved issues.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S is the most affordable version, while the SE adds more of the safety and convenience equipment that makes the Passat easier to live with. The R-Line brings sport-themed styling, but the review notes that it cannot be paired with some key safety technologies, so you should be careful not to assume the look matches the equipment.
• Powertrain: Most examples use the standard turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the optional V6 is reserved for the top SEL Premium trim. The 1.8-liter is described as responsive, quick, and stronger than its numbers suggest, with 29 mpg combined and regular gas recommended.
• Safety package: The Passat includes a standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking system and a reversing camera. SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims meet Top Safety Pick+ standards because they add forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, while the SE can be optioned with blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic reverse braking.
• Infotainment: Screen sizes start at 5 inches on the S and R-Line and move to 6.3 inches on SE, SEL, and SEL Premium models. The larger system adds App-Connect with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink, and Car-Net is available with the 6.3-inch setup.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 29 mpg combined, and the review also reports 29.7 mpg on a test loop and 24.8 mpg during more demanding driving.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point if you want the lowest price, but it also starts with the smallest 5-inch infotainment screen, so you give up some convenience and tech. It makes sense if your priority is simply getting into a Passat at the lowest cost.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the more useful 6.3-inch infotainment system and brings in the safety equipment that helps the Passat stand out. If you want the strongest mix of value, comfort, and everyday usefulness, this is the trim to target.
• R-Line: Choose this if you care most about the sport-themed appearance and the dark gray 19-inch wheels. Just be aware that the review specifically calls out safety-equipment limitations on this trim, so it is more about style than added substance.
• SEL: This trim adds more premium equipment, including navigation and the Fender sound system, and it also gets the standard blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features mentioned in the safety content. It suits you if you want a more upscale Passat without going all the way to the top.
• SEL Premium: This is the most fully equipped version, adding the V6, front and rear parking sensors, and Parking Steering Assistant. It is the right pick if you want the most features and the strongest convenience package.

The safety package is thoughtfully arranged, but the review makes clear that some desirable features are not available on every trim, so you should match the trim to the equipment you actually want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 831 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.60% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,059, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $9,059 sits slightly below last year's $9,804.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are limited unless you choose a well-kept example. If you plan to sell later, condition and equipment will matter a lot, because buyers will likely favor cleaner cars with the safety and convenience features they want.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen also made the front structure changes needed for the Passat to reach Top Safety Pick+ standards in SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trim, thanks to forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Standard safety equipment includes Automatic Post-Collision Braking and a reversing camera, while the SE and higher trims add more advanced driver-assistance features.

One important caveat is that the R-Line cannot be equipped with some of the key safety technologies highlighted in the review, so trim choice affects how much protection and assistance you actually get.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a redesigned front structure and Top Safety Pick+ capability on higher trims.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,578, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,059 average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on trims above the base S.

The bottom line: If you want the lower purchase price and are willing to shop carefully, the 2016 is the better value play. If you’d rather pay more for broader standard safety and tech, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade path.
