Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Toyota Sienna earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

You get a family-focused minivan with broad utility, strong technology, and a cabin that owners consistently praise for comfort and spaciousness. The user feedback also points to good value, especially in the more luxurious Limited models, along with a feature-rich interior. In use-case terms, this is a strong fit if you want a practical people mover with plenty of everyday convenience and a long-running reputation for being competitive in the minivan class.

Good and great deals make up 32.7% of the market, so you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback highlights the Sienna as comfortable, spacious, and feature-rich, and it also points to value and luxury touches in the higher trims. The expert notes reinforce that it has long been a class leader for reliability and that it remains a strong buy for many critics, even if recent testing suggests a slight dip after the refresh. The expert also notes that general reliability and repair data are about average among competitors, which means you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and condition.

There was also a recall on front seatbelts for the 2016 model, so a used example with clean records and documented service is the safer long-term ownership bet.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and equipment still reflect the trim level being advertised. Because this model is often bought for family duty, it also makes sense to check for wear in the seats, sliding-door operation, and any signs of heavy use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim already includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys. The LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo with HD and satellite radio, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, body-color trim, easy-clean fabric, and Scout GPS Link app compatibility.
• Powertrain: Every Sienna uses the same 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque, with FWD versions rated at 18 mpg city/25 highway and 21 mpg combined; AWD drops to 16/23 and 19 combined.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available through packages or standalone options. The Advanced Technology package is offered on FWD Siennas, while AWD models miss out on that package.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7-inch screen and enhanced connectivity. The rear entertainment system with Driver Easy Speak is a standout feature, and the tech setup can be expanded with navigation and other connectivity upgrades.
• Fuel efficiency: FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 highway, while AWD versions are rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway.

Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value starting point, and it already gives you a surprisingly long list of features for a base minivan. If you want the lowest entry price without giving up core convenience items, this is the trim to start with.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power-sliding doors, an upgraded stereo, a larger touchscreen, and more everyday convenience features without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SE: This trim is for you if you want the stiffer sport suspension, tighter steering, and a more distinctive look, along with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate.
• SE Premium: This is the most feature-rich version of the SE and adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-seat entertainment system, navigation, and enhanced smartphone integration.
• XLE: This trim trades away the sportier setup for a more comfort-oriented feel and adds features like keyless entry and ignition, a power passenger seat, and power rear quarter windows.
• Limited: This is the top luxury-oriented choice, with premium leather, navigation, parking sensors, a heated steering wheel, a JBL audio system, and upscale exterior touches.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the Advanced Technology package is available on FWD Siennas, not AWD models.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,450 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.79% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,191, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?

The current average of $17,360 sits slightly below last year's $17,857.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the current trend means you may not see rapid appreciation, but the decline is modest rather than steep. The Sienna’s strong owner satisfaction and family-friendly reputation should still help support demand when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top scores from both IIHS and NHTSA, with only the NHTSA frontal crash test and the IIHS small overlap frontal-crash test receiving the second-highest ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety equipment includes traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags including driver’s knee and curtain-length coverage, plus available blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The expert notes also point out that the Sienna’s stopping distance is average for the class. The main caveat is that not every advanced driver-assistance feature is standard, so you should verify which safety package or trim you’re looking at before you buy.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its broad utility, strong technology offering, and family-focused practicality.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,684, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,360 average.
• It was described as the best version of the Sienna yet, with broad improvements and stronger safety.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2016 is the primary pick because it combines strong owner satisfaction, a softer price trend, and plenty of inventory. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value-oriented alternative.
