CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 162 currently listed for sale near Richmond, VA and an average price of $22,498.00, 35.8% of 2016 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.
75.9% of 2016 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, comfortable midsize SUV that leans hard into everyday usability rather than flash. In its generation, Toyota gave the Highlander more upscale styling and interior features, and reinforced the body to make it more comfortable on the road. That formula helped make it one of the most comfortable and practical vehicles in its class, with a smooth ride and a cabin that suits family duty well.
It also offers the kind of versatility that makes a Highlander appealing to used buyers. The model comes with gas and hybrid powertrains, front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. Cargo space is a major strength, with up to 84.3 cubic feet available with the seats folded down, and every Highlander includes an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Toyota Safety Sense is standard as well, bringing lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking.
The tradeoff is that the Highlander is not especially exciting to drive. Its steering is generally numb and uncommunicative, and the SUV is described as lacking vigor. Even so, that same soft suspension helps deliver the smooth ride many shoppers want, and the Highlander’s strong safety reputation, reliability, and overall practicality make it an easy vehicle to recommend for buyers who value comfort and long-term usefulness over driving thrills.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.93/5, which points to very strong satisfaction with the ownership experience.
The owner feedback consistently highlights comfort, reliability, and the abundance of features, while also praising the smooth ride and strong V6 power. That lines up well with the Highlander’s practical, family-focused setup, especially if you want a comfortable midsize SUV that prioritizes everyday usability over flash. With 28.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.93/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the summary also emphasizes comfort and a trouble-free ownership experience. That kind of praise matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for daily driving and family duty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history should carry real weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on bodywork, alignment, and signs of uneven wear that can hint at past repairs. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, because the best used Highlanders are the ones that have been cared for consistently.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.18% compared with last year.

What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $18,390 sits slightly below last year's $18,995.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition will matter a lot, because well-kept examples should stand out more clearly in a market with plenty of inventory. Strong ownership satisfaction can help support demand when it’s time to list.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.18% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,405, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,390 average.
- Toyota updated the V6, styling, and standard safety equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a refreshed model with updated styling and equipment, the 2017 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize newer features over upfront savings.
