CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 164 currently listed for sale near Greensboro, NC and an average price of $16,187, 29.3% of 2016 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.
67.1% of 2016 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a comfortable, practical midsize SUV that puts everyday usability ahead of flash. In this generation, Toyota gave the Highlander more upscale styling and interior features, and reinforced the body to make it more comfortable on the road. It also offers both gas and hybrid powertrains, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional, which gives shoppers a straightforward choice between efficiency and traction.
For 2016, the Highlander’s appeal comes from its broad mix of space, equipment, and safety. It can carry up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down, and every Highlander comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and more. Toyota Safety Sense is standard, including lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking. The hybrid can deliver 35 mpg combined, which is much more than most other midsize SUVs, and the model’s strong safety record helped it earn “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety every year of this generation except 2026.
The tradeoff is that the Highlander is not especially exciting to drive. The source describes it as lacking vigor, with soft suspension tuning and numb, uncommunicative steering, and it also notes that the third row is tiny. Even so, its comfort, practicality, reliability, and long-term value make the 2016 Highlander a compelling choice for buyers who want a well-rounded family SUV rather than a sporty one.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

| Year-Round Low | $17,938 |
| Year-Round High | $18,933 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,931 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.60% |

There are 1,842 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.93/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and feature content, and they also highlight the smooth ride and strong V6 power. That lines up well with the Highlander’s role as a practical midsize SUV for everyday family use, especially if you want space and usability over flash. With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.93/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, with praise for a dependable ownership experience and a vehicle that many drivers feel confident keeping for the long haul. That kind of consistency matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for daily family duty. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well each individual example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear. Because this model is often bought for family use, you should also focus on interior condition, seat wear, and how well the features and electronics work.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,842 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.60% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,938, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $18,250 sits slightly below last year's $18,931.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means condition and mileage will matter even more when it comes time to list the vehicle. Well-kept examples should still draw interest because the Highlander’s reputation supports steady demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,225, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,250 average.
- It adds refreshed styling, standard safety tech, and a sportier SE trim.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a fresher-feeling version, the 2017 is the better secondary path for buyers who want updated styling and a more current feature set.
