Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk stands out as a compact SUV that is built to handle more than the usual daily commute. It is described as comfortable and useful, while still being good to drive both on and off pavement. That combination gives it a broad appeal for buyers who want one vehicle that can cover a lot of different needs without feeling one-dimensional.
Its biggest distinction is capability. The Trailhawk is praised for shrugging off deteriorating city pavement, tackling freeway ramps with enthusiasm, and going places most other SUVs can’t. It is also presented as delivering impressive capability at a reasonable price, which makes it especially appealing to shoppers who want off-road confidence without giving up everyday usability. At the same time, owner feedback points to a sporty feel and a comfortable interior, though some drivers have raised concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability.

My husband and I absolutely enjoy this new car of ours. This is the vehicle we want and need. The features are perfect and everything works great, though we had to replace the brakes, spark plugs , and a few other things. The vehicle is in excellent condition and still looks new. The interior is beautiful. It’s the best vehicle for all of the driving that we do.

Drivers repeatedly praise the sporty feel, comfortable interior, and useful feature set, including heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The overview also frames this Cherokee as a compact SUV that can handle daily commuting, off-pavement driving, and more demanding use without feeling one-dimensional.
That broad usefulness is a major part of the appeal here: you get a vehicle that can serve as an everyday commuter, a family hauler, and a capable adventure rig. With 30.1% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.12/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a sporty, comfortable, and generally satisfying ownership experience, while also noting concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability. The expert review also describes the Cherokee as dependable enough to be worth strong consideration, even while acknowledging the transmission’s reputation for troublesome behavior.
The performance write-up adds that the 9-speed automatic has drawn complaints and that some reliability research predicts weakness because of it, though the test vehicle itself was mostly acceptable in use. The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that transmission behavior and related ownership costs can be more of a concern than the cabin comfort and capability suggest.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?
At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because owner feedback raises concerns about build quality and drivetrain reliability, you should pay close attention to how the transmission shifts and whether the vehicle feels consistent in everyday driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Trailhawk is the rugged, “Trail Rated” version, with revised bumpers, raised height, white-lettered tires, and a more aggressive appearance than the other variants.
- Powertrain: Standard equipment includes a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the optional 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 is described as the better choice and is more efficient on the highway in the Trailhawk.
- Safety package: The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, while blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking are available.
- Infotainment: The Trailhawk uses a Uconnect 8.4 system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, USB and SD card ports, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, Do Not Disturb, and Reply with Text Message features.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 and 4-cylinder are both rated at 22 mpg in combined driving, and the V6 is described as the more efficient highway choice in the Trailhawk.
Which 2016 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but the review makes clear that the Trailhawk is the standout if you want the Cherokee’s full capability and richer equipment. If you’re shopping the lower end of the range, make sure the features you want are actually present.
- Latitude: This is the mainstream step up, and it should make sense if you want a more balanced mix of equipment without jumping all the way to the off-road-focused model.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice for buyers who care more about comfort and appearance than trail hardware, and it sits above the volume trims in the lineup.
- Trailhawk: This is the best-value trim if you want the Cherokee’s defining strengths. It adds the most capable 4WD system, Selec-Terrain, Selec-Speed control, a 56:1 crawl ratio, an off-road suspension, and serious ground-clearance and water-fording capability.
The safety content also notes that the standard reversing camera has poor low-light clarity, so if safety tech matters to you, prioritize a well-equipped example with the available driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,493 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,564.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $10,555 sits slightly below last year's $11,509.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, equipment, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because the Cherokee still draws interest for its comfort, capability, and distinctive character, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.12/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee safe?
The federal government rates the Cherokee at four-star overall, mainly because it earns no better than four-star frontal impact protection. The IIHS gives it a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test, while rating it Good in all other assessments and Superior for front crash prevention.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, and available safety tech includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The main caveat is the weak small-overlap result, which is worth weighing carefully if crash protection is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.12/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights the Trailhawk’s ability to handle both daily driving and serious off-road use while still remaining comfortable and useful.
The bottom line: The 2016 Cherokee makes the most sense if you want a used compact SUV with real capability, a comfortable cabin, and a market price that has moved in your favor. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the softer pricing and decent inventory to shop carefully, but you should be selective about condition and maintenance history.
