Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Elantra 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra stands out in the compact car class by striking a balance that is neither especially smooth and refined nor rough and gruff. That middle-ground character helps it feel easy to live with, and it is part of why the car impresses more than it distresses.
Its appeal also comes from a design that, even at six years old, still looks futuristic rather than dated. Beyond style, the Elantra is described as roomy, efficient, simple, and safe, which gives it broad everyday appeal for buyers who want value without unnecessary complexity. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, a smooth ride, and attractive design. Some drivers, however, have been disappointed by the lack of Bluetooth and a spare tire.

We loved our Elantra! Great ride, great on gas and it was put to the ULTIMATE TEST when during a downpour a tractor trailer flew by and swerved into our lane causing us to hydroplane across 3 lanes then down an embankment where we flipped on our side and finally came to a stop when we hit a tree line. Climbed out the top through the passenger window and walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The rescuers, police and tow truck guys all said wow, that car saved your lives!

I love the Hyndai Elantra. It is a very solid, good steering, roomy, reliable and sporty looking vehicle. I believe it is comparable to a Honda Civic or Chevy Cruze.

I bought the 2016 GL model late 2015 I have been very impressed - a wider body than the Ford Focus i owned, great features, cruise even with a Manual, AC electric windows and locks, blutooth, very comfortable and smooth quiet engine. very sharp looking and excellent mileage. my vehicle now has 170,000 kms and runs like new, no issues mechanically at all just oil changes and filters and brakes which I did myself - parts very easy to obtain online line rotors etc.

2016 Hyundai Elantra Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2016 Hyundai Elantra prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2016 Hyundai Elantra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,411 |
| Year-Round Low | $7,974.02 |
| Year-Round High | $8,882.13 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $8,878 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.25% |
Prices have softened 5.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,295 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $7,974.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and excellent fuel economy. The review summary also points to a smooth ride and attractive design, which fits the car’s roomy, efficient, and commuter-friendly character.
For you, that means the Elantra makes the most sense if you want a practical compact car that emphasizes value over flash. With 25.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The review summary also highlights reliability, and the cost-effectiveness notes point to favorable dependability ratings and low predicted ownership costs.
The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing the car as a dependable, economical choice with a drivetrain that behaves predictably and without aggravation. It also notes a generous warranty and roadside assistance coverage, including help with a flat tire during the coverage period.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
At 47.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car is priced near the low end of the market. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. Because this model year is older, you should also pay close attention to wear items and how the car has aged inside and out.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is missing the reversing camera, while higher versions add more visual polish and features such as 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The SE gets a 6-speed manual, while Value Edition and Limited versions use a 6-speed automatic with an Active Eco setting. The setup is efficient and easygoing rather than exciting.
- Safety package: The car includes a reversing camera on most trims, but it does not offer modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a touchscreen radio with Bluetooth. Higher trims add a 7-inch display, Pandora access, navigation, premium audio, and Blue Link subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA ratings are 28 mpg city/38 highway/32 combined, and the test loop returned 33.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the budget pick, but it lacks the reversing camera and keeps the feature set relatively simple.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Value Edition is the best balance of price and equipment, adding the automatic transmission, Active Eco setting, and a more polished feel without pushing into luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most appealing if you want the richest feature set, including the 7-inch infotainment display, navigation, premium audio, and Blue Link services.
- Off-road trim: The Sport is the least natural fit for everyday buyers because its firmer tuning and unique steering make it less relaxed than the other versions.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,295 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 47.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,974.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $8,411 sits slightly below last year's $8,878.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. It also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has a clean history. If you choose a well-kept example now, you may have a better chance of limiting further value loss.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?
It earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA and Good ratings from IIHS in all tests except the small overlap frontal impact evaluation, where it receives an Acceptable rating.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The car includes a reversing camera on all but the base SE, but it does not offer modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies. That means you should not expect the kind of active safety suite found in newer compact cars.
The main caveat is the IIHS small overlap frontal result, which is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim equipment and overall condition, and you should not assume this older model matches newer rivals in active safety tech.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It delivers strong value, a roomy cabin, and dependable everyday commuting manners.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $8,012, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,411 average.
- It offers stylish design, spaciousness, and strong value.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $9,615, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,411 average.
- It adds a redesign with more advanced technology and safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, value, and proven satisfaction, the 2016 is the sensible choice. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 is the better path if you want newer tech and are willing to pay more.
