CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Hyundai Elantra
overall

Summary
With 2,081 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,659.00, 26.1% of 2019 Hyundai Elantras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Hyundai Elantra 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
54.7% of 2019 Elantra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the 2019 Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value, but its updates do not address the car’s ho-hum driving dynamics. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a lot for the money, even if the driving experience is not the car’s strongest trait.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also described as updated and upgraded, but the summary suggests that satisfaction depends heavily on choosing the turbocharged Sport trim. Owner feedback reinforces the Elantra’s practical appeal, with praise for its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. At the same time, some drivers note that the cabin ceiling feels low and that the car can be a bit loud on the road.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

Prices have softened 6.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,062 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $11,413.91, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. That lines up with the car’s value-focused mission in the overview, where it’s positioned as a strong fit for buyers who want a lot for the money. The market also shows 27.5% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping this year carefully.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise for its comfortable cabin, practical features, and usefulness for daily errands and longer trips. The expert evaluation also frames it as a value-oriented car that can make sense for long-term ownership if you prioritize practicality over excitement. Hyundai’s warranty coverage and ownership perks add another layer of confidence for used buyers.
The main long-term ownership risk is that you should expect a car built for value, not one that hides every compromise.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on bodywork quality, alignment, tire wear, and any signs that safety systems or sensors were repaired poorly. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment carefully, because some versions add meaningful safety and convenience features that others do not.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and safety equipment. The Limited trim brings the most upscale feel, including upgraded interior touches and more premium tech.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It delivers acceptable acceleration and 32 mpg in combined driving, but the driving experience is more practical than engaging.
- Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit.
- Infotainment: Versions above the base SE get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. The Limited trim upgrades to an 8-inch display, navigation, and a premium Infinity sound system, and Value Edition or Limited trims also get Blue Link trial services.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine returns 32 mpg combined, and testing showed 29.3 mpg on one loop with 32.4 mpg over a week of driving.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the least equipped choice, and it misses the broader safety and convenience content that starts showing up higher in the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the best value pick because it adds the core driver-assistance suite, making it a much more complete daily driver.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most appealing if you want the best tech and comfort, including the upgraded infotainment system, premium audio, and added safety features.
The Limited trim also gets the extra safety package features that are not standard on lower trims, so it’s the one to target if you want the most complete version.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,062 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,413.91, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $11,698 sits slightly below last year's $12,530.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-equipped versions should be easier to move than bare-bones examples, especially if they present cleanly and have a strong service history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2019 Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it a four-star overall rating, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Most versions include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. If you want adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit, you need the Limited trim.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 refresh adds updated styling and upgraded interior and tech content.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $13,331, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $11,698 average.
- It adds free scheduled maintenance and improved fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the stronger buy because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for added maintenance coverage and newer standard safety content, the 2020 is the cleaner alternative for price-insensitive shoppers.
