Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the 2019 Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value, but its updates don’t address the car’s ho-hum driving dynamics. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a lot for the money, even if the driving experience is not the car’s strongest trait.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also described as updated and upgraded, but the summary suggests customer satisfaction depends heavily on whether you choose the turbocharged Sport trim. Owner feedback reinforces the Elantra’s everyday appeal, with praise for its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. At the same time, some drivers note that the cabin ceiling feels low and that the car can be a bit loud on the road.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

Economic and decent car. Convenient to drive around the city

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

With 28.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car people feel good about living with over time, especially because of its comfortable cabin, smooth acceleration, and useful everyday features. The expert review also describes it as a very nice car that exudes quality and value, with straightforward technology and a solid-feeling interior. Hyundai’s long warranty coverage and ownership perks add another layer of confidence for used buyers.
The main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may have seen harder use, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior accident or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and how well the car’s features and safety systems work in real-world use. Because this model is valued for everyday comfort and technology, you’ll want to make sure those strengths still show up in the specific car you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the simplest version, while higher trims add more comfort, tech, and safety equipment. The SEL trim brings important driver-assistance features, and the Limited trim adds more premium convenience and safety content.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s tuned more for everyday commuting than excitement, with acceptable acceleration and a combined fuel economy figure of 32 mpg.
- Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit.
- Infotainment: Any version other than the base SE gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. The Limited trim upgrades to an Infinity premium sound system, and the Ultimate Package adds an 8-inch display and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra returns 32 mpg in combined driving, and a testing loop returned 29.3 mpg before the trip computer read 32.4 mpg after a week.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra lineup and can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
- SEL: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds the important driver-assistance suite while staying below the more expensive trims.
- Value Edition: This trim is a smart pick if you want extra ownership perks and connected-services value without jumping all the way to the Limited.
- Eco: Choose this if your priority is efficiency-focused commuting and you want a trim that leans into economy-minded use.
- Limited: This is the one to buy if you want the most complete package, including the strongest infotainment and safety upgrades.
The safety package starts with the SEL trim, so if you want the most useful standard driver-assistance features without overspending, that’s the trim to target.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,207 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,414, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $11,762 sits slightly below last year's $12,414.
That price movement suggests the Elantra has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to sell if you price it competitively. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to lean on condition, mileage, and equipment to stand out. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still attract attention, especially because this model has strong value appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Starting with the SEL trim, the car includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit. The main caveat is that the NHTSA result is solid but not class-leading.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out for strong value, with top expert scores in cost effectiveness and technology.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $13,534, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $11,762 average.
- It adds free scheduled maintenance and improved fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the stronger buy because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and standout value. If you’re willing to pay more for added ownership perks and a few useful updates, the 2020 is the better alternative.
