Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the 2019 Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value, but its updates don’t address the car’s ho-hum driving dynamics. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a lot for the money, even if the driving experience is not the car’s strongest trait.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also described as updated and upgraded, but the summary suggests customer satisfaction depends heavily on whether you choose the turbocharged Sport trim. Owner feedback reinforces the Elantra’s everyday appeal, with praise for its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. At the same time, some drivers note that the cabin ceiling feels low and that the car can be a bit loud on the road.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

Economic and decent car. Convenient to drive around the city

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

That makes it a smart fit if you want a practical compact sedan for daily errands and longer trips, even if you care more about value and convenience than driving excitement. 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car people feel good about living with over time, especially because of its impressive features, comfortable interior, and usefulness for daily errands and longer trips. It also highlights the Elantra as a good value, which usually matters when you’re trying to count on a car for regular use.
The expert notes reinforce that dependable, low-drama character by describing it as a very nice car that exudes quality and value, even if it isn’t especially rewarding to drive. Hyundai’s long warranty coverage and ownership perks also help reduce some of the risk that comes with buying used.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition first: bodywork, interior wear, and how well the electronics and driver-assistance features function.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE misses some of the convenience and safety equipment that appears on higher trims, while SEL and above add more driver-assistance features and better everyday usability.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the car is tuned more for calm commuting than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system.
- Infotainment: Versions above the base SE include a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio; the Limited trim adds an Infinity premium sound system, and the Ultimate Package brings an 8-inch display and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the Elantra will get 32 mpg in combined driving, and the test loop returned 29.3 mpg before the trip computer showed 32.4 mpg after a week.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the cheapest path into the Elantra, but you give up some of the convenience and safety equipment that makes the higher trims easier to live with.
- SEL: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds important driver-assistance features while staying below the more expensive trims.
- Value Edition: This trim makes sense if you want extra ownership perks and connected features without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- Eco: Choose this if your priority is efficiency-focused commuting and you want a trim that leans toward economy-minded use.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with the strongest infotainment and comfort upgrades, plus the most advanced safety equipment.
The safety package starts with the SEL trim, so that’s the one I’d target first if you want the best balance of price and protection.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,158 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,414, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $11,731 sits slightly below last year's $12,434.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against future resale if you buy too high today. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is to buy at a strong price now and keep the car in clean, well-documented condition.
The Elantra’s value-oriented reputation helps support demand, especially because shoppers continue to respond to its feature content and ownership perks. A lower entry price today can also make it easier to stay competitive when you eventually list it for sale.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2019 Elantra gets top marks across the board from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Most versions include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. You need to move up to the Limited trim to get adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement for automatic braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit system.
That means the Elantra is broadly well equipped for safety, but you should pay attention to trim level if you want the most advanced driver-assistance features. The LATCH anchor rating is the main caveat to keep in mind if you plan to install child seats.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 brings freshened styling and strong value, but its updates don’t fully fix the car’s dull driving dynamics.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $13,528, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $11,731 average.
- It adds free scheduled maintenance.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it offers strong value, solid owner satisfaction, and a lower average price. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer example with added ownership perks, the 2020 is the better secondary path.
