Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the 2019 Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value, but its updates do not address the car’s ho-hum driving dynamics. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a lot for the money, even if the driving experience is not the car’s strongest trait.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also described as updated and upgraded, but the summary suggests that satisfaction depends heavily on choosing the turbocharged Sport trim. Owner feedback reinforces the Elantra’s practical appeal, with praise for its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. At the same time, some drivers note that the cabin ceiling feels low and that the car can be a bit loud on the road.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

Economic and decent car. Convenient to drive around the city

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

That lines up with the overview’s focus on a value-first compact sedan that gives you a lot for the money, especially if you want practical daily transportation with useful tech and comfort. With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise for its trouble-free-feeling comfort, smooth acceleration, and practical usefulness for daily errands and longer trips. The expert evaluation also emphasizes value and ownership perks, including a long warranty and roadside assistance, which supports confidence in long-term ownership.
You should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, because used-car reliability depends heavily on how well the previous owner cared for the car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any bodywork, warning lights, or uneven wear. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use, including cabin wear, road noise, and how the car drives at low and highway speeds.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort, tech, and convenience features. The Limited trim stands out for its upgraded interior feel and added equipment, but you should watch for feature gaps if you’re comparing it with lower trims.
- Powertrain: The main setup uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The car is tuned more for efficiency and easy commuting than excitement, and the driving modes can change the feel a bit.
- Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit.
- Infotainment: Versions above the base SE get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. The Limited trim adds an Infinity premium sound system, and the Ultimate Package brings an 8-inch display plus navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 32 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the least expensive path into the Elantra, but it is also the most basic. If you want the lowest purchase price and can live without the richer standard tech found higher up the range, this is the trim to start with.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds important driver-assistance equipment while staying below the more expensive versions. If you want a smarter balance of price and features, this is the one to focus on first.
- Value Edition: This trim makes sense if you want extra convenience and connected-services perks without jumping all the way to the Limited. It is a good middle ground for shoppers who want more comfort and tech than the SEL.
- Eco: Choose this if your priority is efficiency-oriented commuting and you want a trim that leans into economy-minded ownership. It suits buyers who care more about running costs than luxury touches.
- Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the strongest mix of comfort, tech, and safety upgrades. Buy this if you want the most complete Elantra experience and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package gets stronger as you move up the range, with the most advanced features reserved for the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,136 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,415.34, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $11,679 sits slightly below last year's $12,503.
That price movement suggests the Elantra has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop carefully now, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later because the market has already moved down from last year’s level. Strong value perception can also help keep demand steady when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
It earns top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Starting with the SEL trim, the Elantra includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit.
The main caveat is that the LATCH anchor accessibility result is weaker than the rest of the crash-test performance, so you should pay extra attention if you plan to install child seats regularly.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The updated styling and strong value focus make this year especially appealing if you want a lot of equipment for the money.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $13,524, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $11,679 average.
- It adds free scheduled maintenance and new standard safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it offers strong value, solid owner satisfaction, and a lower average price. If you are willing to spend more for added maintenance coverage and newer standard safety equipment, the 2020 is the better alternative.
