Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Elantra 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a full redesign inside and out, with a clear emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety. That combination helped move it to the front of the small-car pack, and it also reflects Hyundai’s broader push to make value-oriented cars that do not feel cheap. For shoppers, that means the Elantra aims to deliver the kind of everyday usability compact-car buyers want without giving up the features and polish that once were reserved for larger or pricier vehicles.
What makes this model especially appealing is the way it builds on a very competent outgoing generation while adding some of the best styling, ergonomics, safety, and technology available for the money. It is presented as a strong answer for buyers who want a commuter that is good on gas, easy to park, and still comfortable enough to feel well equipped. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests that comfort, fuel efficiency, and value are major strengths, while acceleration power may leave some drivers wanting more.

I just lost my Hyundai 2017 in a crash. It was my second Elantra and I drove them both for 8 years. I did routine maintenance but never had any repair bills . They are great cars and that is why I am looking to buy another one.

I recently bought the Limited trim from CarHub in Stafford, VA. The features are great, it drives smoothly, I feel safe in this car, and the value was great as Im able to pay it off without destroying my wallet. I genuinely feel like this car matches up to a Corolla and a Civic, so I highly recommend it!

The 2017 model has some nice upgrades compared with the previous generation. Different front appearance. It also has a better gas mileage and a more sophisticated entertainment system. I would have loved to see also heated seats and a sun-roof which is only available in certain sport versions. But all in all I am very happy about this car and consider it a good value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — 4.73/5. It also earns an expert rating of 8.83/10.
The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money, and many also like the comfortable seating and advanced technology. The overview frames it as a commuter-friendly small car that is easy to park, good on gas, and still comfortable enough to feel well equipped.
With 26.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to comfort, fuel efficiency, and value, while also suggesting that many owners see it as a dependable everyday car. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing it as a value-oriented vehicle that does not feel cheap and by emphasizing its strong everyday usability.
The available maintenance and ownership setup also supports low-stress use for many buyers. For used shoppers, the main long-term risk is choosing a car with a rough history or deferred upkeep, so condition and records matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
At 47.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on signs of uneven wear, repair quality, and whether the car still feels tight and well sorted on the road. If you are comparing several examples, condition should matter more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE trim is the entry point and comes with power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo, and USB/auxiliary inputs. The Limited adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, with some of those features available on the SE as options.
- Powertrain: The main drivetrain is a 2.0-liter setup with drive modes for Normal, Sport, and Eco. Fuel economy is rated at 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined, while the Limited returns 28 mpg city and 37 highway; the manual SE drops to 26/36.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation with turn-by-turn directions in the gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined. The Limited is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 highway, and the manual SE is rated at 26/36.
Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE gives you the essentials, but it lacks the convenience upgrades that make the car feel more polished day to day. If you want the simplest path into the model, this is it, but you give up features like Bluetooth hands-free calling, keyless entry, and push-button start unless you add them as options.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Limited is the better all-around pick if you want the Elantra to feel more complete. It adds Bluetooth with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted controls, and it can be equipped with navigation and other comfort upgrades through packages.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is also the top trim, and it can be loaded with the Tech Package and Ultimate Package for navigation, premium audio, a sunroof, heated rear seats, adaptive headlights, smart cruise control, lane-departure warning, and collision avoidance.
The safety package is broad for the class, with features like forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,687 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.79% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 47.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,353.03, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $9,633 sits slightly below last year's $10,336.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the car in strong condition, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation pain later. Well-equipped, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?
It is expected to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a five-star NHTSA crash-test rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.79% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a full redesign with strong technology, efficiency, and safety.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,359, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,633 average.
- It feels easy to live with and offers broad everyday appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern, better-equipped version of this compact sedan, the 2017 is the stronger buy. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 can still make sense, especially if you find a clean example with good records.
