Used 2016 GMC Canyon for Sale near Illinois

How much does the 2016 GMC Canyon cost?

Prices have softened 3.02% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 627 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon a good car?

Generally — the 2016 GMC Canyon earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 6.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly point to its comfortable ride, good looks, and balance of power and economy. The overview also frames it as a useful midsize-truck choice for you if you want something smaller than a full-size pickup but still want domestic-brand capability. Even so, owner feedback shows some concern around condition and pricing, so the appeal is strongest when you find a clean example at the right price.

With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a truck that many people found comfortable and dependable enough to appreciate over time, with the balance of power and economy coming through as a recurring strength. The expert review also describes the Canyon as a strong, robust truck, and the cost-effectiveness notes say ownership costs should prove average over time. On the maintenance side, the 2016 changes reduced free service visits and shortened the powertrain warranty, so long-term ownership risk is more about repair exposure after the warranty window than about day-to-day durability.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Canyon?

At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and underbody condition. Because owner feedback mentions condition concerns and unexpected mechanical issues, you’ll want to focus on how the truck was maintained and whether any repairs were done properly. A pre-purchase inspection is especially worthwhile if the listing price looks unusually attractive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Canyon is offered in SL, Canyon, SLE, and SLT trim. The base trim is more work-focused, while higher trims add more comfort and technology, including the available IntelliLink touchscreen and Apple CarPlay. If you want the best mix of equipment and value, the midlevel trims are the ones to compare most closely.
• Powertrain: You can get a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, with 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive. The V6 is described as responsive and capable, with strong towing and hauling ability for the class, while the 4-wheel-drive setup adds capability but also brings a stiffer ride.
• Safety package: An optional forward-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system are available. The forward-collision warning can be overly sensitive, and blind-spot information and rear cross-traffic alert are not offered.
• Infotainment: The available IntelliLink system adds Apple CarPlay, and the setup supports text messaging and Wi-Fi access through OnStar subscription services. The interface uses a touchscreen along with physical knobs and buttons, which makes it easier to operate.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 test truck was rated at 20 mpg in combined driving and returned 20.6 mpg on the test loop.

Which 2016 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, Canyon, SLE, SLT.

Here's the short version:

• SL: This is the most basic path into the Canyon lineup, so it makes sense if you want the truck’s core capability without paying for extra comfort or tech. It’s the trim to consider if your priority is keeping the purchase price down.
• Canyon: This trim sits above the base model and is the one to watch if you want a more balanced starting point without jumping straight to the pricier upper trims. It should be your best-value trim if you want a sensible mix of equipment and cost.
• SLE: This is the trim to target if you want a more polished daily driver and expect to spend real time in the cabin. It’s the sweet spot for shoppers who want more features without going all the way to the top.
• SLT: This is the most upscale trim in the lineup, and it’s the one to choose if you care most about comfort, appearance, and available equipment. It makes the most sense if you want the most premium-feeling Canyon.

The safety package is optional, and the forward-collision warning system can be overly sensitive.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Canyon?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 627 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.02% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,849, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $18,298 sits slightly below last year's $18,868.

That tells you the market has softened, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you’re planning to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the truck in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to protect value later. The current pricing also suggests that clean, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than trucks with questionable history or visible wear.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2016 GMC Canyon earns a Good rating from IIHS in moderate overlap frontal-impact testing, and it earns a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon includes OnStar automatic crash response, which can alert authorities if the airbags deploy, and it requires an active subscription to work. An optional forward-collision warning system and lane-departure warning are available, but blind-spot information and rear cross-traffic alert are not offered. The forward-collision warning can also be overly sensitive, so you should test that system carefully if the truck has it.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds Apple CarPlay to the available IntelliLink system.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $19,971, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,298 average.
• It is described as the best among midsize pickup trucks at towing, hauling, and just about everything else.

The bottom line: If you want the better price and a strong mix of owner satisfaction and tech, the 2016 is the smarter starting point. If you’re willing to pay more for the next year’s broader capability focus, the 2017 is the better upgrade path.

How does the 2016 GMC Canyon compare to the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

Our experts score the 2016 GMC Canyon 6.3/10 and the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10. The Canyon and Colorado are closely related, but the Colorado edges ahead on expert score and average used price. The Canyon has the stronger good-and-great deal share, while the Colorado has slightly better accident-free inventory and more listings to choose from. If you want the lower average price and more inventory, the Colorado has the advantage; if you prefer the GMC badge and a slightly better deal share, the Canyon still makes sense.
