CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Canyon

Summary
With 661 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,264.00, 31.9% of 2018 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Canyon stands out in the midsize pickup class by blending truck utility with a more upscale feel than many rivals. By this point in the second generation, GMC had already moved the Canyon toward a more luxurious identity, and that character shows up in the available Denali trim, which adds chrome exterior accents, 20-inch wheels, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a Bose premium audio system, and a wireless charging pad. The Canyon also offers a wide spread of trims and equipment, from the more work-oriented versions to off-road-focused models, giving buyers more ways to tailor the truck to their needs.
For 2018, the Canyon’s infotainment screen was increased to seven inches, and the rearview camera gained trailering assist guidelines. That year’s lineup also included the Denali trim with its upscale equipment, while the available off-road package brought features such as all-terrain tires, an off-road-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, front recovery hooks, and power-adjustable heated front seats. The Canyon’s appeal is also helped by its available diesel engine, which was the mileage leader in the second generation and was rated at 22/30 mpg city/highway and 25 mpg combined in rear-wheel-drive form.
There are tradeoffs, though. The buying guide notes that GMC Canyons of this generation depreciate faster than rival midsize pickups, and the Canyon’s utility and off-road capability do not clearly outshine other trucks in the segment. Even so, for shoppers who want a midsize pickup with a more refined cabin and a broader sense of luxury than most competitors, the 2018 GMC Canyon has a distinctive appeal.

While not having a lot to compare it to, it appears so far to be a strong running engine (2.8 Duramax) . The seating seams hard in contrast to my last truck (2500 HD ) , both being Denali versions with leather seats . The fuel mileage is outstanding averaging low to mid 30s . The electronics package is full of creature comforts including heated and cooled seats . Overall a nice ride.

Generally — the 4.25/5 user rating points to solid owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its strong running engine, comfort, and good looks, and many also like the extended bed option. The Canyon’s more upscale cabin and broad trim spread make it a fit if you want a midsize pickup that feels a bit more refined than many rivals. With 29.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a value-oriented example if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a strong running engine and comfort, and it also points to a truck that many owners have enjoyed over time. At the same time, some drivers mention transmission issues, so reliability-minded shoppers should pay close attention to service records and how the truck drives under load.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a truck that has been maintained inconsistently or shows signs of drivetrain trouble.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
At 66.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership patterns. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or a history of hard use. Focus on overall condition, drivetrain behavior, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, where you can find value if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 693 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.18% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,263.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $21,362 sits slightly below last year's $23,782.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy in at a more favorable level today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck has been maintained. A clean history and strong presentation matter more when the broader market is already pricing the model lower than it was a year ago.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.18% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,137, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $21,362 average.
- It emphasizes serious towing and hauling capability in a compact midsize package.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2018 is the stronger primary path because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If your top priority is saving money upfront, the 2017 is the better secondary path, especially if you value its capability-first focus.
