What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Charger?

At 49.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or equipped with optional packages. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment on the car matches the listing. Because the Charger can be optioned in very different ways, it is worth checking that the features you want are actually present.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and SXT are the key starting points, and the base setup is simpler than better-equipped versions. The cabin is described as plain with simple surface texturing, while higher-spec examples add features such as soft-touch materials, real aluminum trim, and refined controls.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 3.6-liter V6, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on both trim levels. The V6 is described as excellent and efficient for a car this size.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Some of these technologies are optional rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The car uses an easy-to-use Uconnect system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Wireless smartphone integration and OTA capability are not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returned 22.9 mpg in combined driving and is described as essentially matching the EPA’s 23 mpg combined estimate.

Which 2016 Dodge Charger trim should I buy?

The 2016 Dodge Charger is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, SXT.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point if you want the Charger’s core V6-and-RWD formula at the lowest cost. It makes the most sense if you care more about the car’s size, style, and everyday usability than about extra equipment.
• SXT: This is the best-value trim because it adds the more appealing mix of comfort and equipment while staying close to the affordable end of the lineup. It is the better choice if you want the Charger experience without stretching into pricier options.

The safety content notes that some driver-assistance technologies are available as upgrades, so check carefully for the exact equipment on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Charger?

Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market and the best examples will move quickly.

• Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 888 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.62% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 49.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,966, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Dodge Charger's resale value?

The current average of $15,770 sits slightly above last year's $15,367.

That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The relatively tight year-round price range also suggests that clean, well-equipped examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Strong demand for the Charger’s style and performance image should continue to help hold interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Dodge Charger safe?

The 2016 Dodge Charger gets a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact crash test from the IIHS, while other crash-test assessments earn top ratings from both the federal government and the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Charger can be equipped with forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The safety content also notes that the car’s structural age contributes to the weaker small-overlap result, so that is the main caveat to keep in mind when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Charger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 49.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.62% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends family-sedan usefulness with a more satisfying, underappreciated personality.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,807, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,770 average.
• It looks more aggressive and keeps an approachable, predictable cabin.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $18,176, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $15,770 average.
• It is louder, more attention-grabbing, and aimed more squarely at enthusiasts.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, satisfaction, and everyday usefulness, the 2016 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 gives you a lower entry price, while the 2017 makes sense if you want a more dramatic personality and are willing to pay more for it.
