What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Challenger?

At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of bodywork, tires, headlights, and interior condition. Because some owners mention limited visibility and cheaper-feeling materials, it’s smart to focus on wear items and signs of poor upkeep. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as trim and mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SXT includes keyless entry and ignition, automatic headlights with LED halo running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, 2-tone cloth, a leather-wrapped wheel, a 6-way power driver’s seat, and a 5-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add larger screens, leather, heated and vented seats, upgraded audio, and more performance hardware, so the base car is the most stripped-down choice.
• Powertrain: The Challenger starts with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque, and it can also be had with V8 power in higher trims. The V6 returns 19 mpg city and 30 highway, while the 5.7-liter V8 and 6.4-liter V8 trade efficiency for stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: The Driver Convenience Group adds bi-xenon headlights, power-folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path alert. The Technology Group adds automatic wipers, automatic high beams, and forward-collision warning, while adaptive cruise is available with the automatic.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB inputs, and an SD card slot. Plus trims add an 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice command, satellite radio, and smartphone integration, and the system can be upgraded further with stronger audio options.
• Fuel efficiency: The base V6 returns 19 mpg city and 30 highway, while the 5.7-liter V8 can return 15 mpg city and 23 highway with the manual or 16 mpg city and 25 highway with the automatic. The 6.4-liter V8 is more performance-focused and less efficiency-oriented.

Which 2016 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is offered in 5 trim levels: SXT, R/T, SRT 392, Hellcat, and R/T Scat Pack.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the value play if you want the Challenger look, the 305-hp V6, and the core everyday features without paying for V8 power. It gives you the most accessible entry point into the lineup.
• R/T: This is the best fit if you want the classic muscle-car experience, because it adds the 5.7-liter V8 and a rear-view camera. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price, performance, and usability.
• SRT 392: This trim adds the 6.4-liter V8, bigger Brembo brakes, forged alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, better leather, and an 18-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. It’s the best choice if you want a serious performance step up without going all the way to Hellcat territory.
• Hellcat: This is the extreme choice, with the supercharged 6.2-liter V8, a damped steering system, automatic wipers, and automatic high beams. It’s for you if outright power matters more than everyday restraint.
• R/T Scat Pack: This trim pairs the 6.4-liter V8 with Brembo brakes, a sport exhaust, a heated sport steering wheel, and the Super Track Pack. It’s the best-value performance pick if you want a big jump in capability without paying Hellcat money.

The Driver Convenience Group and Technology Group are worth seeking out if you want more safety and convenience features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Challenger?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,240 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $22,482, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $23,906 sits slightly below last year's $24,088.

That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. You’re not looking at a steep drop in value, but you also shouldn’t expect rapid appreciation. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones, especially if they have desirable trims or strong equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Challenger can be equipped with blind-spot warning, rear cross-path alert, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, a rear-view camera, and parking sensors. The Driver Convenience Group and Technology Group add much of the useful driver-assistance hardware, but some of those features are not standard across the lineup. The lower frontal-crash rating is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds fresh trim and wheel options, plus the shaker hood.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,098, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,906 average.
• It blends retro style with everyday livability.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $20,550, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $23,906 average.
• All-wheel drive broadens appeal with calmer manners.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the right pick if you want the refreshed Challenger with strong owner satisfaction and stable pricing. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 and 2017 can both be smart alternatives, but the 2016 remains the most balanced choice for shoppers who want the classic muscle-car formula with updated options.

How does the 2016 Dodge Challenger compare to the 2016 Ford Mustang?

Our experts score the 2016 Dodge Challenger 7.8/10 and the 2016 Ford Mustang 7.5/10.

The Challenger gives you more horsepower from its base V6, a roomier-feeling cabin, and a more authentic retro-muscle identity. The Mustang is cheaper on average and has a slightly better deal share, but the Challenger’s stronger performance score and broader muscle-car character make it the more distinctive choice if style and straight-line punch matter most.
