What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Challenger?

At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, tire wear, and whether the car has been maintained consistently.

Because this model can be optioned very differently from trim to trim, it also pays to verify the equipment on the exact car you’re considering. Make sure the features you want are actually present, and pay close attention to visibility, lighting, and interior condition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base SXT models come with a 5-inch touchscreen, keyless entry and ignition, automatic headlights with LED halo running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, and a 6-speaker audio system. Higher trims add larger screens, leather, heated and ventilated seats, upgraded audio, and more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The lineup ranges from a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp to V8 options including a 5.7-liter engine and a 6.4-liter V8, with the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 at the top. Efficiency varies widely by engine, so match the power level to your driving needs.
• Safety package: The Driver Convenience Group adds bi-xenon headlights, power-folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path alert. The Technology Group adds automatic wipers, automatic high beams, and forward-collision warning. Some of these features are trim- or package-dependent.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 5-inch touchscreen, while Plus trims add an 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice command, satellite radio, and smartphone integration. A navigation system is available, and some trims can add performance data displays.
• Fuel efficiency: The 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 19 mpg city and 30 highway, with a combined rating of 23. The 5.7-liter V8 returns 15 mpg city and 23 highway with the manual, or 16 mpg city and 25 highway with the automatic, while the 6.4-liter V8 is described as giving up only 1 mpg around town compared with the 5.7-liter.

Which 2016 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is offered in 5 trim levels: SXT, R/T, SXT Plus, R/T Plus, and SRT 392.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s style and everyday usability at the lowest rung. It gives you the V6, the 5-inch touchscreen, and a surprisingly solid standard equipment list, making it the value play for shoppers who care more about the look and feel than V8 power.
• R/T: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it brings the V8 experience, a rear-view camera, and 20-inch wheels with upgraded brakes. If you want the classic muscle-car feel without jumping into the pricier performance trims, this is the sweet spot.
• SXT Plus: Choose this if you want the V6 but also want the more upscale cabin treatment, including the 8.4-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, leather upholstery, heated and vented front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
• R/T Plus: This is the better choice if you want the V8 plus the upgraded interior and tech package. It layers in the larger touchscreen, smartphone integration, satellite radio, leather, heated and vented seats, and other comfort upgrades.
• SRT 392: This is the performance-focused step up, with the 6.4-liter V8, Brembo brakes, forged alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, and the available Driver Convenience Group. It suits you if you want the strongest all-around hardware short of the Hellcat.

The Driver Convenience Group adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, bi-xenon headlights, and power-folding mirrors, so it’s worth seeking out if safety and convenience matter to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Challenger?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,239 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.80% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $22,476, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $25,154 sits slightly above last year's $24,710.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. It also means well-kept examples may hold their appeal better than you’d expect for a niche performance coupe.

Because demand is tied closely to condition, trim, and equipment, the best resale outcomes will usually come from cars with desirable options and clean histories. If you buy carefully now, you improve your odds of getting a stronger return later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.76/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Challenger includes full-length side curtain airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, traction control, and stability control. Available safety tech includes blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, a rear-view camera, and parking sensors.

A key caveat is that the frontal crash rating trails the rest of its NHTSA results, so that’s worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority. If you want the most helpful driver-assistance features, look for the relevant option packages rather than assuming they’re standard.

Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.80% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.76/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a fresh shaker hood and new trim and wheel options.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,084, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $25,154 average.
• It blends retro style with everyday livability.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $20,472, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $25,154 average.
• It adds all-wheel drive for a more approachable driving character.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of classic muscle-car character, owner satisfaction, and current-market availability, the 2016 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 and 2017 can both make sense, but you should compare condition and equipment closely before choosing.
