What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven as a performance model. Pay close attention to body condition, tire wear, brake condition, and signs of hard use, since the Challenger’s personality can attract enthusiastic ownership. If you want the best odds of a clean purchase, focus on documented maintenance and a careful test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive, a smooth ride, light steering effort, and a more year-round-friendly personality, while the base rear-wheel-drive trims keep the traditional muscle-car feel. The GT also comes with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, xenon headlights, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
• Powertrain: The GT uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic. It is tuned for quiet cruising and decent fuel economy, but the performance notes say it can feel less exciting than the car’s bold image suggests.
• Safety package: The Challenger includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional. Some driver-assist features are not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system includes navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps. The tech setup also includes Performance Pages, and the tested GT had auto high beams and rain-sensing wipers.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the GT at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the expert test recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to stay competitive on condition and mileage. Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds all-wheel drive on the GT trim, broadening the Challenger’s everyday usability.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $23,722, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,738 average.
• It leans hard into authentic retro muscle-car identity with fresh options and a shaker hood.

The bottom line: If you want the better current-market value, the 2017 is the stronger starting point. If your priority is the most authentic retro-muscle character and you find the right example, the 2016 remains worth a look.
