CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Challenger
overall

Summary
With 1,380 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,689.00, 26.6% of 2017 Dodge Challengers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Challenger 4.64 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
56.3% of 2017 Challenger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Challenger stands out for leaning harder into retro muscle-car character than almost anything else on the road. Its design and cabin presentation are overtly nostalgic, and the modern Challenger’s orange-red seats reinforce that old-school attitude. For buyers who want a car that makes a visual statement and feels rooted in classic American performance, that personality is a major part of the appeal.
This model year also has a more approachable side, because all-wheel drive tones down the Challenger’s muscle with milder manners. That makes the 2017 Dodge Challenger sound less like a pure weekend toy and more like a car that can be easier to live with day to day. At the same time, owner feedback suggests the car is still valued for its powerful performance, comfort, and stylish design, while some drivers have noted that it can feel slightly underpowered for its size, can be expensive to fuel with premium gas, and may leave some buyers wanting more modern interior features.

Very retro! The SXT package with its 6 cylinder was plenty as the vehicle has plenty to keep it going, but it's more of a retro 70's showcar and still draws attention!

| Year-Round High | $22,023.05 |

Prices have softened 5.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,392 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare options.
If you find a listing below $20,177.10, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Dodge Challenger earns a 4.64/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, comfort, and stylish design. They also value its muscle-car heritage and daily-driving capability, while the overview points to a car that makes a strong visual statement and can feel easier to live with thanks to available all-wheel drive.
With 26.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable and enjoyable to live with over time, especially for its powerful performance, comfort, and daily-driving capability. The expert drive notes that the GT’s highway manners are calm and composed, with a smooth ride and light steering effort, which supports the sense that it can be easy to count on in regular use.
The GT’s all-wheel-drive setup adds year-round usability, and the cost-effectiveness notes describe the model as a good value with steady improvements to powertrains, technology, and comfort. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some versions can be expensive to fuel and may not feel as modern inside as newer rivals.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?
At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and trim match the listing. Because some driver-assistance features were optional, it’s worth confirming exactly what’s installed on the specific car you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive and a more year-round-friendly setup, while the base car lacks some of the comfort and convenience touches found on better-equipped versions. The cabin mixes retro gauges with modern screens, but the overall presentation is still rooted in old-school muscle-car style.
- Powertrain: The GT uses a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic and makes 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque. It’s smooth and quiet at speed, but the V6 can feel less exciting than the car’s looks suggest.
- Safety package: The available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert. A reversing camera is standard, but many of the other aids are optional.
- Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system includes navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps. The tech setup is user-friendly, and the Performance Pages app adds detailed vehicle data.
- Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the review recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles. The V8 models are thirstier.
Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Hellcat, and other trims explicitly referenced in the model-year content.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The base car gives you the Challenger’s style and presence, but it lacks the GT’s all-wheel-drive advantage and some of the convenience and tech features found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The GT is the best all-around pick if you want the most usable balance of performance, comfort, and all-weather capability. It adds AWD, strong tech, and a calmer daily-driving personality.
- Premium/top trim: The fully loaded GT shows how much equipment the Challenger can carry, including advanced tech, cooled front seats, remote start, and the available premium audio system.
- Off-road trim: Not applicable here.
The safety package is not standard across every version, so you should confirm which driver-assistance features are included on the specific trim you’re shopping.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,392 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,177.10, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?
The current average of $20,664 sits slightly below last year's $21,894.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively if the market stays loose. The current trend suggests the model is not in a strong appreciation phase, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to resell. Cars with stronger owner satisfaction tend to hold buyer interest better, which can help support resale value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?
The 2017 Dodge Challenger got the highest Good rating in only the moderate front overlap and side crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it earned a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with four-star frontal crash ratings.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety suite includes lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert, though many of those features are optional rather than standard. A reversing camera is standard. Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 adds the GT’s all-wheel-drive option and a strong mix of comfort, tech, and year-round usability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $25,524, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,664 average.
- It emphasizes the Challenger’s most authentic retro muscle-car identity.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy, the 2017 is the stronger choice because pricing has eased and the GT broadens the car’s appeal. If your priority is the purest retro-muscle personality, the 2016 may still be worth a look, but you’ll likely pay more for it.
