How much does the 2016 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 6.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,299 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable number of options to compare.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to strong safety, build quality, comfort, and an enjoyable driving experience. That lines up with the car’s use case as a driver-focused sedan that still gives you room for you and three other people, so you get everyday practicality without giving up the sporty character.

33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback also highlights the car as reliable, dependable, and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over the long term. The expert drive notes that BMW improved the transmissions and redesigned the electric steering for 2016, while also upgrading the suspension, which supports the sense that this model year was refined for better day-to-day durability and drivability.

BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a sporty luxury sedan can become expensive if prior maintenance was skipped or if wear items were neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on signs of uneven panel gaps, steering feel, brake wear, and any evidence that the car was driven hard or maintained on a stretched schedule.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 340i stands out for its stronger performance focus, while the 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, and M3 each bring different engine and equipment combinations. Base versions can leave out some desirable convenience and driver-assistance features, so compare equipment carefully.
• Powertrain: The 340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine with 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed sport automatic or an available 6-speed manual, and xDrive AWD is available. BMW also notes four driving modes: Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors, while the Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot information, and a 360-degree camera view system. Some of these features are optional rather than standard.
• Infotainment: iDrive is included, and BMW says the navigation system starts up quicker, calculates routes faster, and can be updated over Wi-Fi. The Technology Package adds navigation, BMW Online, BMW Apps, and a heads-up display, while enhanced Bluetooth with smartphone integration is also available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 340i returned 22.4 mpg on a test loop and was rated at 23 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 6 trim levels: 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3.

Here's the short version:

• 320i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest likely cost, but you should expect the fewest standard features and the least performance headroom.
• 328d: Choose this if you want a diesel-powered option and are prioritizing efficiency-minded ownership over outright speed.
• 330e: This plug-in hybrid model is for shoppers who want electrified efficiency in the 3 Series lineup.
• 330i: This is the balanced choice if you want a mainstream gas model with a broader mix of equipment and capability than the base trim.
• 340i: This is the best-value pick for enthusiasts because it delivers the strongest performance character, the turbocharged 6-cylinder, and the most compelling driving experience in the lineup.
• M3: Pick this only if you want the most performance-focused version and are willing to pay for it.

The Driver Assistance Plus Package is the most complete safety add-on, while the basic reversing camera remains optional on lower trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,299 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,683, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $11,885 sits slightly below last year's $12,773.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car more approachable for you now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the car maintained, the current pricing gives you a lower entry point than last year’s shoppers had.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a Marginal result in the IIHS small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW’s driver-assistance suite includes BMW Assist eCall with enhanced automatic collision notification and an SOS emergency request button. The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors, while the Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot information, and a 360-degree camera view system.

The main caveat is that the IIHS small overlap frontal result is weaker than the rest of the car’s crash-test performance, so you should pay close attention to accident history and repair quality on any used example.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 refresh brings improved transmissions, redesigned electric steering, and upgraded suspension.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,418, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,885 average.
• It still delivers the brand’s sharp driving dynamics and powerful engine.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2016 is the better buy because it combines updated driving dynamics with softer pricing than last year. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you find one with a clean history and solid maintenance records.
