CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 1,011 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,285.00, 32.3% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars.
57.5% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is known for its strong reliability, off-road capabilities, and unique features like a power rear window that opens like a regular window.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is a standout in the SUV market, particularly for those who prioritize off-road performance and rugged reliability. Built on a traditional body-on-frame platform, it offers impressive ground clearance and a robust design that appeals to adventure seekers. The TRD Pro variant, in particular, is tailored for hardcore off-road enthusiasts, featuring specialized suspension and off-road technologies that enhance its capability on challenging terrains. While it excels in rugged environments, the 4Runner does have some limitations as a daily driver, including less-than-ideal fuel efficiency and a somewhat dated interior design. However, its spacious cargo area and practical features, such as the sliding rear window, make it a versatile choice for both outdoor adventures and everyday use.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from expert testing point to a model that resonates with shoppers who want a rugged SUV. The strongest themes in owner feedback are a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and useful off-road capability.
That lines up with the vehicle’s body-on-frame, adventure-focused setup in the overview, especially if you want something that can handle outdoor use better than a typical crossover. The market also shows 31.7% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly points to strong reliability, and the expert evaluation also emphasizes the 4Runner’s durable, truck-like construction and dependable off-road hardware. The performance notes reinforce that it feels like a tried-and-true V6 SUV rather than a fragile, high-strung machine.
Toyota also includes free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps early ownership costs. For used buyers, the bigger risk is not whether it can last, but whether a previous owner used it hard off-road or skipped maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen trail use or heavy towing. Focus on signs of underbody damage, suspension wear, tire condition, and any evidence that the vehicle was used hard rather than just driven on pavement.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, which undercuts the point of buying this SUV if you want real all-weather or off-road capability. The Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control, while the Limited adds luxury touches like ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the 5-speed automatic can feel slow to downshift when you want passing power. Fuel economy is a weak point, with an EPA estimate of 18 mpg combined and a real-world result of 16.8 mpg in testing.
- Safety package: A standard reversing camera is included, but the 4Runner otherwise lacks many modern active safety features. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and blind-spot monitoring is not mentioned as part of the standard setup.
- Infotainment: Standard tech includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, predictive traffic and weather, and a USB 2.0 port. The larger 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited, and the system does not stand out for ease of use.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says 18 mpg combined, and the test vehicle returned 16.8 mpg. That makes this a better fit if you value capability more than fuel savings.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the least compelling choice if you want the 4Runner’s core strengths, because it starts with rear-wheel drive. It also misses the more serious off-road hardware and the richer comfort and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best value if you want the 4Runner’s off-road personality without paying for luxury extras. It adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, and terrain-selectable driving modes.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most polished version, with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, Safety Connect, full-time 4WD, and a locking center differential.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro is the most specialized choice for serious trail use, with Bilstein shocks, TRD front springs, a front skid plate, and off-road tires. For typical daily driving, its harder-edged setup makes it the least practical of the bunch.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting huge discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,019 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,397.44, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $22,285 sits slightly below last year's $22,945.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect value retention to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the SUV has a clean history.
The 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and its strong owner satisfaction help support demand over time. Well-kept examples should remain attractive to buyers who want a rugged SUV with proven appeal.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Aside from a standard reversing camera, the 4Runner offers few of the latest active safety features. Toyota reserves Safety Connect for the Limited, and the model’s high center of gravity makes rollover avoidance especially important when you’re driving it hard or making sudden maneuvers.
That means you should pay close attention to how the vehicle was used and whether its safety equipment matches the trim you’re considering. If you want the most safety-related convenience features available here, the Limited is the trim to focus on.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The TRD Pro stands out for hard-core off-road capability and serious trail hardware.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,758, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $22,285 average.
- It keeps the same rugged body-on-frame formula with strong off-road capability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,544, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $22,285 average.
- It adds crawl-speed control, a locking rear differential, cell-phone navigation, and higher towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of current pricing and strong owner satisfaction, the 2015 is the sensible target. If your priority is saving money, the 2014 is the better value play. If you want a slightly newer version with added capability and can spend more, the 2016 is worth a look.
