Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars.
78.5% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is known for its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability, making it a favorite among off-road enthusiasts.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is a robust SUV that excels in off-road capabilities, making it a top choice for adventure seekers. Its body-on-frame construction and impressive ground clearance of 9.6 inches allow it to tackle rugged terrains with ease. The TRD Pro variant, in particular, is designed for hardcore off-road enthusiasts, featuring upgraded suspension and performance enhancements. While it offers a spacious interior with ample cargo space, some users note that it may not be the most fuel-efficient option in its class, with an EPA rating of 18 mpg combined. Despite its limitations as a daily driver, the 4Runner's reliability and strong resale value make it an appealing choice for those who prioritize adventure and durability over everyday practicality.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 — you’re looking at a model that owners rate highly, and the expert score is 7.33/10. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and off-road capability. The overview also points to a practical, spacious SUV with useful cargo space and outdoor-friendly features, which fits the 4Runner’s adventure-first use case. That said, the same data also makes clear that it’s less compelling if you want a refined daily driver or family hauler.
With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to strong reliability, and it also frames the 4Runner as a vehicle people trust for rugged use and long-term ownership. The expert notes reinforce that dependability angle by describing it as a tried-and-true SUV with impressive reliability ratings and value retention. Maintenance is free for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about living with an older design that can feel compromised in everyday driving.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that’s been used off-road. Focus on condition, not just trim or equipment, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether it has seen hard use. Pay close attention to signs of wear that could affect daily drivability, visibility, and interior usability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, which undercuts the SUV’s core appeal, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited adds leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: You get a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It’s adequate, but the 5-speed automatic can be slow to downshift, and fuel economy is described as dismal.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a reversing camera and Hill Start Assist Control. Models with 4WD also get Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Blind-spot monitoring is not mentioned, and Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, and Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not mentioned, and OTA capability is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says 18 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is rear-wheel drive, so it misses the standard 4WD hardware that makes the 4Runner appealing. It also lacks the more advanced off-road equipment found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best value if you want the 4Runner’s core mission. It adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable terrain modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most comfort-focused choice, with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro is the most specialized choice, with Bilstein shocks, TRD front springs, a front skid plate, and off-road tires, but it’s the least practical pick for typical daily driving.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited.

- Inventory: There are 1,047 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,394.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $22,107 sits slightly below last year's $22,862.
That softer pricing can help you buy more selectively today, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from last year’s level. For a future seller, that means resale strength will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been cared for. A clean history and strong maintenance record should matter more than ever if you want to protect value.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Aside from a standard reversing camera, the 4Runner offers few of the latest active safety features. The safety content also points out the lack of blind-spot monitoring, and it notes that Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited. The same material flags crash-test and rollover-resistance concerns, so you should treat safety as a key tradeoff if you’re considering this SUV for family use.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 adds the TRD Pro, giving you a factory-built off-road-focused version.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,792, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $22,107 average.
- It emphasizes traditional body-on-frame durability and strong off-road capability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,653, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $22,107 average.
- It keeps the rugged formula while adding strong owner praise for comfort and towing.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing and model-year freshness, the 2015 is the primary path to consider. If your priority is spending less, the 2014 is the better value play. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer example, the 2016 is the natural step up.
