Our experts describe the X5 as a well-finished SUV that stays true to BMW’s performance focus, and the cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that it can be a compelling luxury choice when optioned sensibly. The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that it can be expensive to keep up if you choose a heavily equipped example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW X5?

At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has been in an accident. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and wear match the asking price. Because this model can be option-heavy, it also pays to confirm that the features you want are actually present on the specific vehicle you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5 lineup includes five trims, and the base rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i stands apart because all-wheel drive is standard on the others. Higher trims add more lavish equipment, and the fully loaded versions can become extremely expensive, so you should compare features carefully before paying for extras.
• Powertrain: The X5 offers four engines, including a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 300 hp and a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 445 hp. The inline six is the preferred choice for many shoppers because it balances strong performance with better fuel economy than the V8.
• Safety package: The Active Driving Assistant adds forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard.
• Infotainment: The X5 uses a 10.2-inch LCD screen, and the system includes a searchable digital owner’s manual, live traffic, Internet browsing, oil-level checks, and night vision features. The content does not indicate wireless smartphone integration or over-the-air updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The inline six recorded 24 mpg, while the V8 recorded 17 mpg.

Which 2015 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2015 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, xDrive50i, X5 M.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive35i: This is the only rear-wheel-drive version, so it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and do not need all-wheel drive. It is the simplest path into the lineup, but you give up the standard AWD that comes on the other trims.
• xDrive35i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive while keeping the X5’s preferred 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six and broad torque. It gives you the core X5 experience without pushing you into the pricier V8 models.
• xDrive35d: Choose this if you want the diesel option and are prioritizing efficiency-oriented ownership. It is the trim to consider if you want a different balance of torque and fuel economy than the gas six.
• xDrive50i: This is the V8 choice for buyers who want the strongest straight-line performance and are willing to pay for it. It suits you if acceleration matters more than operating costs.
• X5 M: This is the performance-focused top trim, and it is the one to buy if you want the most extreme version of the X5’s sporty character. It is not the value pick, but it is the enthusiast choice.

The safety content notes that blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW X5?

The market looks moderate, so you can shop selectively without waiting for a deep bargain cycle.

• Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,054 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,440, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2015 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $12,440 sits slightly below last year's $13,855.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than heavily worn or accident-affected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.55/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2015 BMW X5 safe?

The 2015 BMW X5 earns five-star ratings from federal crash tests and the top Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Active Driving Assistant brings forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard. The safety writeup also highlights rain-drying brakes and fade compensation, which add confidence in everyday driving.

Should I buy a 2015 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.55/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends SUV practicality with BMW’s signature driving feel.

Consider the 2014 if:

• At $11,804, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $12,440 average.
• It helped define the luxury SUV segment and remains known for its sporty character.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2015 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2014 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the X5’s core appeal.
