How much does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 4.50% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.

The 4Runner’s appeal is strongest if you want a traditional body-on-frame SUV that still works for everyday driving. The overview emphasizes rugged capability, true off-road strength, and a balance between toughness and usability, while the expert review highlights the same mix of daily comfort and trail-ready character.

34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 4Runner’s traditional truck-based construction and rugged design support its reputation for durability, and the expert review reinforces that it is built for hard use rather than soft-road compromise. The performance notes also point to a powertrain that fits the vehicle’s mission, with a 4.0-liter V6 and available 4WD with low range.

Toyota’s value-focused ownership story also helps here, since the cost-effectiveness notes emphasize strong resale value and a loyal following. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a vehicle built for tougher terrain may have seen harder-than-average use, so condition matters a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?

At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of off-road wear, suspension condition, braking feel, and any evidence that the truck has been used harder than a typical commuter SUV.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SR5 starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multi-information display, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control, 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and rugged visual and functional upgrades, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, luxury-inspired front body work, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and other upscale features.
• Powertrain: The 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4WD is available on the SR5 and standard on the Trail, and the Limited uses full-time 4WD with Active Traction Control.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock brakes, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
• Infotainment: Bluetooth hands-free calling with voice commands is standard. A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim, along with iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, an integrated backup camera, and Entune App Suite on the Trail Premium.
• Fuel efficiency: The SR5 RWD returns 17 mpg city/22 highway, and the 4WD versions return 17/21.

Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point, and it gives you the core 4Runner experience with the standard V6, available 4WD, and the basic comfort and convenience features. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and do not need the extra off-road hardware or luxury upgrades.
• Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s rugged personality to come through most clearly. It adds crawl control, more ground clearance, and a more trail-focused setup, making it the right pick if you plan to use the SUV for serious outdoor driving.
• Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most road-friendly and upscale version. It adds the most comfort-oriented equipment, including parking sensors and dual-zone climate control, and it is the better fit if you care more about daily refinement than trail hardware.

The Trail Premium sub-trim is the one that adds the 6.1-inch touchscreen and Entune App Suite features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 661 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,593, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $20,183 sits slightly below last year's $21,134.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, the current pricing trend means you may not see the same peak values that were available a year ago, but the drop is modest rather than dramatic.

The 4Runner’s strong value-retention reputation still matters, especially because buyers tend to reward durable SUVs with loyal followings. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and avoid heavy wear, it should remain appealing in the used market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock brakes, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system. That gives you a solid baseline of active and passive protection for a truck-based SUV.

The safety content also notes that the upright, traditional construction can provide better visibility than many newer vehicles, which is a practical advantage in daily driving. The main caveat is that this is still a body-on-frame SUV, so you should expect a more truck-like driving feel than a crossover.

Should I buy a 2014 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines rugged body-on-frame capability with everyday usability.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,790, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,183 average.
• It leans harder into serious off-road use and cargo-hauling utility.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and the model still delivers the rugged, traditional SUV character you’re likely shopping for. If your priority is a newer-year alternative and you’re willing to pay more for it, the 2015 is the secondary path to consider.
