What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?

At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any prior collision. Focus on overall condition, signs of repair quality, and whether the car feels tight and well maintained on the road.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i is the least expensive entry point, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Limited adds leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and fancy gauges. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine for extra power and performance.
• Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT on most trims. The base version offers a 6-speed manual, and the 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque plus a 5-speed automatic. The CVT is described as making the most of the 4-cylinder engine and helping the car feel rarely underpowered in real-world driving.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
• Infotainment: The optional navigation system includes Starlink technology, and the system is described as easy to pair with a phone for contacts, calls, and music streaming. The content does not specify wireless CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, or OTA capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i model is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The expert drive also notes a weeklong average of 26.4 mpg.

Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?

The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it’s the trim to choose if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable keeping things simple. It’s the only version offered with a 6-speed manual, but most shoppers will likely want more equipment.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds a strong mix of convenience and tech, including a power driver’s seat, reversing camera, Bluetooth, and upgraded audio features. It also gets EyeSight, which makes it the most compelling balance of value and safety.
• 2.5i Sport: This trim is the style pick, with 18-inch wheels, fog lights, a sunroof, and a more distinctive look. It’s the one to choose if appearance matters most, but it skips EyeSight.
• 2.5i Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with leather, dual-zone climate control, and the premium Harman Kardon audio system. It suits you best if you want the most upscale cabin in the lineup.

EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 393 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,189, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?

The current average of $8,904 sits slightly below last year's $8,934.

That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is usually a good sign if you plan to resell later. It also means you’re not buying into a sharply inflated price environment, so depreciation pressure appears manageable.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy safe?

The 2014 Subaru Legacy earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.

A key caveat is the three-star rating in the individual side-impact pole test, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, standard all-wheel drive, and high marks for safety and reliability.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,528, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $8,904 average.
• It brings a redesigned, bigger cabin with a more polished look.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it delivers strong satisfaction, solid safety, and steady pricing. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer redesign and a roomier, more upscale feel, the 2015 is the better secondary path.
