Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Legacy stands out as a practical family sedan that does a lot of things well without drawing much attention to itself. It may not be the prettiest four-door car in its class, but it earns praise for fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and its ability to handle harsh weather. It also represents good value, which helps explain why it can appeal to buyers looking for a sensible all-around choice rather than a flashy one.
On the road, the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i benefits from a CVT that makes the most of the 4-cylinder engine’s output, so it rarely feels underpowered in real-world driving. That same setup helps the car deliver the kind of efficiency many shoppers want from a midsize sedan, while the driving experience is described as fun. Owner feedback reinforces the Legacy’s strengths in safety, comfort, reliability, all-wheel drive performance in winter, and fuel efficiency, though some drivers note that it lacks some modern tech features found in competitors.

I Love this car, my favorite color and drives so smooth and can't say enough how much room there is.

When I started researching fuel-efficient all wheel drive vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was at the top of the list. I live in the Northeast, and drive about 40 miles each way (mostly highway) to and from work, and during the winter months, I need AWD. I test drove the 2014 Subaru Legacy and immediately loved that it handles like a sports car, not like an SUV. I also like the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which makes for a smooth ride and acceleration. But most of all, love the money it will be saving me at the pump! I needed to make sure that it was reliable and safe, so after some additional research, took delivery on my first red car!

I have always heard extremely terrific reviews of Subaru’s, from safety, comfort and milage. These cars last FOREVER! And in my experience, they are not an overly priced car.

How can you go wrong with an all wheel drive car that is always at the top of the charts when it comes to safety and reliability for under $24,000? Do you get all of the technological bells and whistles as some of the other cars in its class? No. But if you just want a solid car that has decent gas mileage, is great in bad weather and can be had for a decent price, then this is the car for you.

With 394 listings available, you have a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its safety, comfort, reliability, all-wheel-drive performance in winter, and fuel efficiency. That lines up with the Legacy’s practical family-sedan mission, especially if you want a sensible all-around choice rather than something flashy.
The market also shows 32.7% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they feel confident counting on it. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Legacy is expected to cost relatively little to own over the long run, and it notes high reliability marks from Consumer Reports and J.D. Power.
The cost-effectiveness commentary also highlights strong residual values and reasonable ownership costs, which supports the case for durable day-to-day use. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in winter use or has higher mileage. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and any signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear so you can separate a clean example from one that has been repaired.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i is the simplest version, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a better stereo with HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Limited adds leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and fancy gauges. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine for extra power and performance. The best-value trim is the 2.5i Premium for its useful comfort and convenience upgrades.
- Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT on most trims. The base 2.5i is the only version with a 6-speed manual, while the 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 hp and a 5-speed automatic. Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system is standard across the lineup, and the CVT-equipped 2.5i is described as the most fuel-efficient variant.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
- Infotainment: The optional navigation system includes Starlink technology, and the system can pair a phone, download contacts, make and receive calls, and stream music. The content does not support wireless smartphone integration or over-the-air updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The expert evaluation also notes that the CVT helps the car make the most of its 4-cylinder engine and supports strong real-world efficiency.
Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Legacy lineup and are comfortable with the simplest equipment set. It keeps the standard all-wheel-drive setup and the core sedan formula intact.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including the power driver’s seat, reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a better audio setup. If you want the strongest balance of price and features, this is the one to target.
- 2.5i Sport: This trim is the style-focused choice, with 18-inch wheels, fog lights, and a more distinctive appearance. It also adds a sunroof and auto-dimming mirror, but it lacks EyeSight.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the comfort-and-luxury step up, with leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone climate control, and the premium Harman Kardon audio system. It also can be equipped with EyeSight.
- 3.6R Limited: Choose this if you want the 6-cylinder engine and the extra power that comes with it. It is the most expensive path in the lineup and suits buyers who value stronger performance over efficiency.
EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 394 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,194, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $8,798 sits slightly below last year's $8,848.
That small decline suggests the Legacy has been holding value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of price stability can make it easier to estimate what your car may be worth when you decide to move on.
The model’s strong value story also helps support demand, especially because shoppers often respond well to standard all-wheel drive, good fuel economy, and a reputation for reliability. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy safe?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
One caveat is that NHTSA also gives the Legacy a three-star rating in the side-impact pole test. That keeps the safety picture strong overall, but it’s worth noting if crash protection is a top priority for you.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard all-wheel drive, strong fuel economy, and a value-focused ownership story.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,605, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $8,798 average.
- It is bigger and more polished inside.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it delivers strong satisfaction, standard AWD, and stable pricing. If you’d rather pay more for a newer redesign and a roomier, more upscale feel, the 2015 is the better alternative.
