How much does the 2014 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 3.40% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,879 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, and enjoyable driving experience, and they also call out its smooth ride and strong fuel economy. In use-case terms, that lines up well if you want a practical 5-passenger crossover with all-weather capability and everyday versatility. The market also shows 31.4% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the value case.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the review summary also highlights the Forester as a vehicle people trust for an enjoyable, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert driving notes reinforce that dependability by describing how it handled snow, ice, mud, and rain without fuss. The cost-effectiveness commentary also emphasizes its useful standard equipment and all-weather capability, which can make ownership feel worthwhile over time.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition can vary by trim and prior use, so a careful inspection matters more than the badge alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

At 63.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any evidence that the car’s all-weather use has taken a toll. Because some owners mention lower-trim compromises and durability concerns, condition should matter as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i starts at $21,995, while the 2.5i Premium adds a massive sunroof and roof rails. The cabin is simple and straightforward, but lower trims can feel less solid, so the Premium is the better value if you want a more complete everyday setup.
• Powertrain: The 2.5i trims use a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or CVT and symmetrical all-wheel drive. The 2.0XT trims add a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque for buyers who want more punch.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes 7 airbags, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Subaru EyeSight is optional on most trims and adds lane-departure and forward-collision warning functions.
• Infotainment: The Premium trim’s touchscreen handles stereo and navigation, plus AM/FM/XM and Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is dated for the model year, and the screen and icons are small.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i with the CVT is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The 2.5i with the 6-speed manual returns 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the Turbo XT trims return 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.

Which 2014 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT Premium, 2.0XT Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Forester’s core all-weather capability at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the simplest path into the model, but the cabin and tech are the least compelling here.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the features that make the Forester feel more complete, including the massive sunroof, roof rails, and the touchscreen with navigation and Bluetooth streaming audio. If you want the sweet spot between price and usefulness, this is the trim to target.
• 2.0XT Premium: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and the more energetic driving character. It also gets X-Mode, which helps in more inclement terrain.
• 2.0XT Touring: This is the top-end choice if you want the most equipment and the turbo power together. It suits you best if you want the most fully equipped Forester and are willing to pay for it.

Subaru EyeSight is optional on most trims, so check whether a specific listing includes that safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,879 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.40% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,512, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $9,636 sits slightly below last year's $9,976.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year desirability. Listings with strong maintenance records and cleaner histories should hold up better than average.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with 7 standard airbags, a reinforced safety structure, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Subaru EyeSight is available as an option on most trims and adds lane-departure and forward-collision warning capability. The main caveat is that this safety suite is not standard across the lineup, so you should confirm whether a specific used example has it.

Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The year’s standout is its strong all-weather capability and practical versatility.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,104, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,636 average.
• It adds a Top Safety Pick from IIHS and stronger recognition for safety.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and useful all-weather capability. If safety recognition and a newer model-year feel matter more than price, the 2015 is the better path.
