Why it stands out
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that blends comfort, technology, and performance in a way that makes it more than just a basic family car. Chevrolet’s engineers deserve credit for steering that’s tight and sporty at high speeds while demanding little effort at slow speeds and when attempting to park, which gives the Malibu an easygoing feel in daily driving without giving up composure when the pace picks up. The result is a car that aims to be efficient and approachable while still feeling polished behind the wheel.
That balance is part of what makes the 2014 Malibu appealing to buyers. The summary describes it as an efficient 4-door promising enviable levels of comfort, technology and performance, and owner feedback reinforces that impression with praise for excellent fuel economy, a quiet ride, and comfort for family trips. It is also often seen as a strong value for the price. On the other hand, some owners have raised concerns about warranty issues and the absence of certain features such as fog lights, so its appeal is strongest for shoppers who prioritize comfort, efficiency, and a well-rounded driving experience over a long list of extras.

Excellent car exactly what I want. Sorry about warranty issues.

I love all the car features not over whelming with controls nice and simple. 2.5 Inline 4 Cylinder feels like a 6 and excellent gas mileage. Come with a spoiler and a turn signal painted mirrors normally found on a LT model. Vehicle was a great value less than 10 Grand with 42k miles on it. Just missing fog lights easily can be added latter.

I like that the car has automatic stop when I am stopped for awhile that really helps on the gas. I like that it has automatic start for the cold winters. I also like the 2 year worry free maintenance on my car that saves me a lot of money.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or has incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s features and maintenance history match the seller’s description. If you’re comparing multiple examples, the cleanest, best-documented car is usually worth the small premium.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LS starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, OnStar, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and cruise control. The 1LT adds the MyLink 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, satellite radio, voice-recognition technology, heated mirrors, and floor mats. The 2LT adds dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys. The 3LT is essentially a 2LT with a more powerful standard engine. The 1LTZ adds leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and heated 8-way power-adjustable front seats. The 2LTZ adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine. The best-value trim is often the one that gives you the features you’ll actually use without pushing too far up the price ladder.
- Powertrain: The Malibu uses two distinct 4-cylinder powerplants and is strictly front-wheel drive. The base 2.5-liter engine makes 196 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged 2.0-liter makes 259 hp and 295 lb-ft. The base setup is tuned for strong everyday efficiency, while the turbo engine brings much quicker acceleration.
- Safety package: The Malibu earned an overall 5-star rating from NHTSA and a Good ranking in all IIHS tests. Standard safety equipment includes 10 airbags, and available features include rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. The tested 2LTZ also included forward-collision warning.
- Infotainment: The MyLink system uses a 7-inch touchscreen on the 1LT and includes text-message reading and response, iPhone-specific Eyes Free mode, Pandora, Stitcher, and voice control. The setup is described as easy to use, with bright icons and quick phone pairing.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
Which 2014 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 6 trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1LTZ, 2LTZ.
Here's the short version:
- LS: This is the simplest way into the Malibu, and it gives you the core sedan experience with Bluetooth, OnStar, cruise control, and alloy wheels. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and don’t need many extras.
- 1LT: This is the trim that adds the most obvious everyday convenience upgrades, including the MyLink touchscreen, satellite radio, voice recognition, and heated mirrors. It’s a strong value choice if you want the Malibu’s tech without moving too far up the price ladder.
- 2LT: This trim brings a more upscale feel with dual-zone climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power lumbar adjustment, and larger wheels. It’s a good fit if comfort matters more to you than keeping the budget as low as possible.
- 3LT: This is the 2LT formula with the more powerful standard engine, so it’s the pick if you want stronger performance without jumping all the way to the premium trims.
- 1LTZ: This trim adds leather upholstery, heated power front seats, and other premium touches that make the cabin feel more upscale. It suits you if you want a nicer interior and are willing to pay for it.
- 2LTZ: This is the top-end choice here, adding a power moonroof and the upgraded engine. It’s the trim to target if you want the most content and the strongest performance in one package.
The safety content also shows the Malibu’s standard airbags and available driver-assistance features, so you should compare trims carefully if those systems matter to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 741 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,565, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $7,606 sits slightly below last year's $8,009.
That price movement suggests the Malibu has softened, which can be a challenge if you’re planning to sell in the near future. If you buy one now, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. Well-kept examples with clean records should hold up better than cars with accident history or deferred maintenance.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu earns an overall 5-star rating from NHTSA and a Good ranking in all IIHS tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevrolet equips the Malibu with 10 standard airbags, and available safety tech includes rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. That gives you a solid safety foundation, especially if you choose a better-equipped trim. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you’ll want to confirm exactly what’s installed on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights a well-sorted, efficient 4-door with strong comfort, technology, and performance.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, comfort, and owner satisfaction, the 2014 Malibu is a solid year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can shop aggressively and focus on the cleanest, best-documented examples; if you want a newer-feeling alternative, a nearby model year may be worth comparing for added features and a fresher market profile.
