CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary
With 135 currently listed for sale near Philadelphia, PA and an average price of $13,257.00, 23.7% of 2018 Chevrolet Malibus for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu 5 / 5 stars.
57.0% of 2018 Malibu models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a roomy midsize sedan that blends good value with a more polished feel than earlier Malibus. By this generation, Chevrolet had given the car a longer wheelbase and overall length, which created a larger, more open-feeling back seat, and the sleek styling helped it look more modern than many rivals. It also offered a broad range of trims and powertrains, including a hybrid, giving shoppers several ways to tailor the car to their priorities.
For 2018, the Malibu’s standard engine was a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rated at 30 mpg combined. The Malibu Hybrid paired a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a 76-kW electric motor for a total output of 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, along with an EPA combined fuel economy rating of 46 miles per gallon. The available 2.0-liter turbocharged engine made 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and was mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That mix of efficiency and available power is a big part of the Malibu’s appeal, especially for buyers who want a comfortable commuter without giving up all performance.
The 2018 Malibu also had a useful technology story. It came with Chevy MyLink on a seven-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while an eight-inch screen was optional on upper trims and standard on Premier. Depending on trim, it could be equipped with lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and front and rear park assist. At the same time, the car was not perfect: reviewers found the standard 1.5-liter engine produced lackluster acceleration, and the Malibu’s safety scores were described as middling. Still, its strong reliability reputation for this generation, roomy cabin, and efficient powertrain choices make the 2018 Malibu an appealing used-car pick.

The premier One of the NICEST vehicles I’ve ever driven. Coming from someone who’s previously owned a Mercedes S600. The quality for the price point is insane on the Malibu premier. It floats like a cloud at highway speeds, has extremely comfortable heated and cooled leather seats, and the air system is top notch. To top everything off, the Malibu Premier is one of the absolute quickest sedans under 40k if not the quickest. 0-100 yesterday. Need to pass someone on the highway? Done in a split second and you didn’t even spill a drop of your open coffee in the cup holder. After driving one, I CANNOT see how people settle for base models, or even worse, something as junk as a Kia or Hyundai instead of opting for a nice quality sedan. Spend your money wisely and get a Malibu premier.

How much does the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,223 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,634.26 |
| Year-Round High | $12,516.52 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,411 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.51% |
Prices have softened 1.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,700 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $11,634.26, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, efficient fuel economy, and polished ride quality. The review summary also highlights quick acceleration and a luxury feel on Premier models, especially when equipped with heated and cooled leather seats.
That lines up well with its role as a roomy midsize sedan: you get a practical commuter with a more upscale feel than many shoppers expect. With 24.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a dependable ownership experience, with owners emphasizing comfort, efficiency, and a generally positive day-to-day experience. It also suggests the car can be trouble-free enough that reviewers focus more on ride quality and fuel economy than on recurring complaints.
For used buyers, that kind of feedback lowers long-term ownership risk, especially if you choose a well-maintained example with clean history and consistent service records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for uneven panel gaps, tire wear, suspension issues, and signs of poor repair work.
Because this is a used midsize sedan, condition matters as much as mileage. Focus on maintenance records, interior wear, and how the car drives on a cold start and at highway speeds.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Malibu?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 24.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,700 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,634.26, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $12,223 sits slightly below last year's $12,411.
That modest decline suggests the Malibu is holding value reasonably well, but not aggressively appreciating. For a future seller, that means your return will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has a clean history.
Because the market still shows steady demand and a meaningful share of shoppers are finding deals, a well-kept Malibu should remain easy enough to price competitively. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 24.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,983, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,223 average.
- It offers a recently refined redesign with broad appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall ownership signal and are comfortable paying a bit more, the 2018 is the better primary choice. If your priority is lower upfront cost, the 2017 is the smarter secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
