CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary
With 143 currently listed for sale near Philadelphia, PA and an average price of $13,837, 25.9% of 2018 Chevrolet Malibus for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu 5 / 5 stars.
62.2% of 2018 Malibu models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a roomy midsize sedan that blends good value with a more polished feel than earlier Malibus. It sits in the Malibu’s ninth generation, which was introduced as a 2016 model, and this version was praised for its sleek styling, larger and more open-feeling back seat, and a broader range of technology than before. It also had a reputation for being more reliable than earlier front-drive Malibus, while still remaining cheaper than many rivals.
For 2018, the Malibu’s standard engine was a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rated at 30 mpg combined. The Malibu Hybrid was still part of the lineup, pairing a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a 76-kW electric motor for 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, along with an EPA combined fuel economy rating of 46 miles per gallon. The available 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivered 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, though it returned 26 mpg combined and was tied to the top trims.
This model year also offered a useful mix of safety and infotainment features. Depending on trim, buyers could get lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and front and rear park assist, while the MyLink system ran on a seven-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An eight-inch screen was optional on upper trims and standard on Premier, and the Malibu’s active safety features were still not standard across the lineup. That combination makes the 2018 Malibu appealing to shoppers who want comfort, efficiency, and available technology, even if some versions are less refined than key competitors and the standard engine was criticized for lackluster acceleration.

The premier One of the NICEST vehicles I’ve ever driven. Coming from someone who’s previously owned a Mercedes S600. The quality for the price point is insane on the Malibu premier. It floats like a cloud at highway speeds, has extremely comfortable heated and cooled leather seats, and the air system is top notch. To top everything off, the Malibu Premier is one of the absolute quickest sedans under 40k if not the quickest. 0-100 yesterday. Need to pass someone on the highway? Done in a split second and you didn’t even spill a drop of your open coffee in the cup holder. After driving one, I CANNOT see how people settle for base models, or even worse, something as junk as a Kia or Hyundai instead of opting for a nice quality sedan. Spend your money wisely and get a Malibu premier.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, efficient fuel economy, and ride quality. The review summary also highlights a luxury feel in higher trims, along with quick acceleration and appealing features like heated and cooled leather seats.
That lines up well with the Malibu’s role as a roomy midsize sedan for commuting and everyday family use, especially if you want a comfortable cabin and a broad range of trim and powertrain choices. With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a dependable ownership experience, with repeated praise for comfort, efficiency, and a generally positive day-to-day experience. The absence of specific complaints in the owner feedback also supports the impression that this model year is one you can count on.
For used buyers, that kind of owner sentiment lowers the risk of unpleasant surprises, though you should still verify maintenance history and overall condition before committing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report first so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on body panels, alignment, tires, and signs of uneven wear that can hint at past repairs.
Because this model year is often bought as a commuter, focus on condition and maintenance records as much as mileage. A clean, well-kept Malibu is the kind of used car that can make sense for everyday driving.

Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,048, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,159 average.
- It offers a recently refined redesign with broad owner praise.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall shopping case, the 2018 is the better primary target because it combines solid owner satisfaction, a softer price trend, and decent deal availability. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2017 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in clean condition and with the features you want.
