How much does the 2016 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 7.97% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,268 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to strong safety, build quality, comfort, and an enjoyable driving experience. That lines up with the model’s driver-focused setup, which is aimed at you if you want a sedan that feels engaging without giving up everyday practicality. The market also shows 33.6% of listings as good or great deals, which helps the value case.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback also highlights the car’s build quality and describes the driving experience as enjoyable and comfortable, with several drivers calling out the car’s dependable feel over time. The expert drive notes that BMW’s driver-assistance technologies work in a refined, subtle way, and the cost-effectiveness notes mention free scheduled maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may have been driven hard or may show wear that doesn’t match the car’s premium image, so condition matters a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified, heavily optioned, or driven in a way that suggests hard use. Focus on body condition, steering feel, brake wear, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because this model is built around performance, you’ll want to make sure the car still feels tight and composed rather than loose or neglected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3 model series. The lineup spans different engines and equipment levels, and not every body style is available in every configuration.
• Powertrain: BMW installs a new turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine in the 340i, with 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed sport automatic is standard, a 6-speed manual is a no-charge option, and xDrive AWD is available.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors. The Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot information, and a 360-degree camera view system.
• Infotainment: iDrive is included in every 3 Series. Navigation, BMW Online, BMW Apps, and a heads-up display are included in the optional Technology Package, and enhanced Bluetooth with smartphone integration is also an option.
• Fuel efficiency: The 340i returned 22.4 mpg on a test loop and was rated at 23 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 6 trim levels: 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3.

Here's the short version:

• 320i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest likely cost, but the available content here emphasizes the broader lineup more than this trim’s specific equipment.
• 328d: Choose this if you want a diesel variant; the content notes that some features, like the standard Harman Kardon stereo and one free year of satellite radio, are optional on this model.
• 330e: This plug-in hybrid model debuts for 2016 and replaces the ActiveHybrid 3, so it’s the one to consider if you want the electrified version of the lineup.
• 330i: This is the mainstream gas choice if you want a newer-badged 3 Series without stepping up to the 340i’s stronger performance focus.
• 340i: This is the best-value pick if you care most about performance. It gets the new turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, strong acceleration, and the most enthusiastic driving character in the lineup.
• M3: Choose this only if you want the highest-performance model in the family and are shopping specifically for that character.

The Driver Assistance Package and Driver Assistance Plus Package are optional safety upgrades, so you’ll want to check whether a used example has them.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,268 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.97% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,694, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $11,837 sits slightly below last year's $12,862.

That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples with desirable options should hold up better than neglected ones, especially since shoppers can compare a fairly large pool of listings.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a Marginal result in the IIHS small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW Assist eCall technology comes standard, with enhanced automatic collision notification and an SOS emergency request button. The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors, while the Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot information, and a 360-degree camera view system.

The small-overlap result is the main safety caveat to keep in mind, especially if you’re comparing this car with newer rivals.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.97% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s 2016 refresh improves the steering, suspension, and technology while keeping the car’s strong performance focus.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,317, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,837 average.
• The 2015 is a sharp, powerful sport-luxury sedan that still rewards enthusiastic driving.

The bottom line: choose the 2016 if you want the better-rounded version of this generation, especially for its updated driving dynamics and stronger tech. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the value path, but you give up some of the 2016’s refinement and updates.
