How much does the 2016 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 8.84% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,269 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its safety, build quality, comfort, and enjoyable driving experience, and they also like the driving modes that sharpen the car’s character. In practical terms, that lines up well with an overview that emphasizes a driver-focused sedan that still gives you room for you and three other people. The market also shows 32.7% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to strong build quality and a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, while also describing it as enjoyable and comfortable. The expert drive notes also emphasize a close, communicative relationship between you, the car, and the road, which supports the sense that this is a car you can count on for engaging daily use. BMW’s free scheduled maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles also helps reduce early ownership burden.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a car this performance-focused can hide wear if it has been driven hard or maintained inconsistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

At 51.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven as a commuter and a performance sedan. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or suspension wear, since the 3 Series is meant to be driven hard and can show it over time.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2016 3 Series is offered in 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3 model series. The base setup is more about the core 3 Series experience, while higher trims add more power and equipment; the 340i stands out for its stronger performance, and the M3 is the most focused performance model.
• Powertrain: BMW installs a new, lightweight, turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine in this version of the 3 Series. An 8-speed sport automatic transmission is standard, a 6-speed manual gearbox is a no-charge option, and xDrive AWD is available. Four driving modes alter the car’s performance character: Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+.
• Safety package: BMW Assist eCall technology is included, with enhanced automatic collision notification and an SOS emergency request button. The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors, while the Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, an active blind-spot information system, and a 360-degree camera view system.
• Infotainment: iDrive is included in every 3 Series. Navigation, BMW Online, BMW Apps, and a heads-up display are included in the optional Technology Package, and enhanced Bluetooth with smartphone integration is also an option.
• Fuel efficiency: The 340i returned 22.4 mpg on a test loop, and BMW cites 23 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 6 trim levels: 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3.

Here's the short version:

• 320i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest rung, but you should expect the fewest extras and the most basic equipment mix.
• 328d: Choose this if you want a diesel-flavored option in the lineup and value efficiency-oriented appeal.
• 330e: This is the plug-in hybrid choice, so it suits you if you want electrified driving in the 3 Series family.
• 330i: This is the best-value pick for most shoppers because it sits in the middle of the range and should balance equipment and price well.
• 340i: This is the one to buy if you care most about performance; the expert summary and drive impressions make clear that this is the standout enthusiast trim.
• M3: Pick this only if you want the most serious performance-focused version of the lineup.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the reversing camera is not standard and comes with the Driver Assistance Package, while the more advanced driver aids are bundled in Driver Assistance Plus.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,269 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.84% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,649, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $11,649 sits slightly below last year's $12,779.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. A clean history and strong service records matter more when the broader market has softened.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a Marginal result in the IIHS small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW Assist eCall technology is included, with enhanced automatic collision notification and an SOS emergency request button. The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors, while the Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, an active blind-spot information system, and a 360-degree camera view system.

The main caveat is that the small overlap frontal crash result is weaker than you would want, so you should pay close attention to accident history and repair quality on any used example.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 update sharpens the car’s driving dynamics and adds meaningful tech and safety improvements.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,222, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,649 average.
• It still emphasizes sharp driving dynamics and a powerful engine.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of updated driving feel, available safety tech, and current-market value, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 can make sense, but you give up some of the refresh benefits that help the 2016 feel more complete.
