Overview

The 1998 Ford Explorer once again topped the sport-utility vehicle market in US sales. Changes were minimal in the exterior and interior design and detail, except for some slight tweaks to the front grill.
Under the hood, though, it was a different story; the high-power 5.0 liter V-8 engine (standard on the Eddie Bauer and Limited trims, and optional on the Sport, XL, and XLT trims) got a design overhaul, boosting its output to 215 horsepower. Buyers who weren't looking for that much power had the choice of two 4.0 liter V-6 engines, including a single overhead cam model with a 205-horsepower output.
Ford also made some refinements to the rack-and-pinion steering system on the '98 Explorer, and reviewers praised its improved agility.
Still, the '98 Ford Explorer appealed mainly to SUV buyers drawn by its roomy interiors, big cargo capacity, and rugged construction, not to drivers looking for a high-performance vehicle. However, its four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options did appeal to people wanting a tough vehicle for off-road adventures.

Love the ride and looks of it, have had it a couple of years. After $2000 worth of front end work, $2700 rebuilt transmission, several hundred dollars trying to have electrical malfunctions tracked down & fixed, if one more major component gives out, it's going to be pushed off a cliff. This is my first Ford...and will be my last! Just too unreliable and expensive for me.

This bad boy got me through my senior year of high school and all of college. My parent made a great choice buying this for me. It had plenty of room for hauling around people or stuff. It also had good power for a 4.0 v6. It was a good reliable vehicle and it never gave me any major mechanical problems.

Been a great truck so far. Amazing fuel economy considering how old it is. The little 4.0L needs to downshift when going up a hill, but it usually has enough pep when needed. It's fun enough, and has the sex appeal too. Pretty sound truck as well. Keep her maintained, and she'll treat you great.. don't maintain her, she'll still treat you good
